# May anomaly: why frosts are back in Ukraine and when real warmth will return

The calendar says it's already late May, but nature in Ukraine has decided to throw a surprise. Instead of the expected summer heat, the country is being hit by a wave of Scandinavian cold. Meteorologists are sounding the alarm: warm days are being replaced by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and night frosts that could ruin the harvest.

### Scandinavian cold instead of summer warmth

The cause of the sudden deterioration in weather is a slow-moving cyclone from the northeast, which has drawn a cold air mass into the region. On Friday, May 29, rain will cover almost the entire country. During the day, temperatures will barely rise to +13...+17°C, and in the south and Zakarpattia — to +20°C. However, the night coolness will be much more noticeable: temperatures will drop to +4...+11°C.

The situation is exacerbated by gusty northwestern winds. In some regions, especially on the Right Bank, gusts may reach 15–20 m/s. This poses a threat to utility services and construction, as well as complicating transportation.

### Threat to agriculture

Night frosts are causing particular concern among farmers. In Baryshivka, Kyiv region, minus 1°C was already recorded on the soil surface, and in Cherkasy, the temperature dropped by 5 degrees in two hours. Meteorologists warn that the peak of the cold will occur on the night of May 29 to 30.

Vitaliy Postrihan, head of the Cherkasy Hydrometeorological Center, notes that the combination of high solar activity and cold air triggers convective processes. This can lead not only to thunderstorms but also to hail, which could cause serious damage to crops.

### Regional weather features

Weather conditions will vary depending on the region:

- **Kyiv and Kyiv region:** Night +7...+9°C, day up to +16°C. Cloudy with brief rains and wind gusts up to 18 m/s are expected.

- **Lviv region:** The lowest night temperature — from +1 to +6°C. Local frosts down to -2°C are possible. During the day, it will warm up to +20°C, but the wind will blow with a force of 9–14 m/s.

- **Odesa region:** Variable cloudiness and brief rains. Wind is northwestern, moderate strength.

Despite the fact that the weather will be capricious on Friday, meteorologists promise that real warmth will only return at the beginning of June. Until then, Ukrainians should prepare for changeable weather and take care of their health.
