A dangerous scenario is brewing within the Kremlin, dictated by the impossibility of achieving victory in the war against Ukraine. According to Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaukėnas, Moscow, unable to cope with the current situation, is seeking alternative ways to demonstrate strength. The most likely targets of a new escalation, according to the Lithuanian politician, are the Baltic states and Poland.

### Internal crisis and the search for a "new victory"

The situation for the Russian leadership is critical. The war against Ukraine, which was supposed to be a triumph, has turned into a failure. The Russian army is not only suffering defeats on the front lines but has also proved powerless against daily strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on its own territory. However, as Kaukėnas notes, the most alarming signal for the Kremlin has been the fuel crisis within Russia.

The fuel shortage has forced Russians to "wake up" and question the official narratives of the authorities. Under these conditions, Putin needs a new escalation and some kind of "victory" to distract attention and consolidate society. This is why, according to experts, the immediate neighbors — the Baltic region and Poland — are in the crosshairs.

### Testing NATO unity

Warnings about Moscow's plans are not new. Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that intelligence agencies are detecting preparations for provocations in Poland and the Baltic states. The key objective of such actions is to test the unity of the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to data cited by Nausėda, Russia could attack the region's critical infrastructure. The threat is comprehensive: attacks could be carried out using both conventional military means and hybrid tactics.

### Falling ratings and regional tension

The political situation in Russia remains unstable: Vladimir Putin's rating continues to plummet rapidly. Against this backdrop, the Kremlin has ordered troops to closely monitor NATO exercises, and incidents such as the launch of a Russian missile, which nearly derailed the Alliance summit in Ankara, only confirm the high level of tension.
