# Gas Stations on the Frontline: Ukraine Prepares New Status to Protect Fuel Stations

Amidst escalating hostilities and a shift in enemy tactics, Ukrainian authorities are re-evaluating approaches to protecting civilian infrastructure. In particular, in frontline regions, there is consideration of granting gas stations (GS) the status of critical infrastructure objects. This decision is intended to be a key factor in strengthening their protection and ensuring uninterrupted operation.

### Status of Critical Infrastructure

This was reported by Viktor Mykita, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. The initiative arose against the backdrop of targeted attacks by Russia on facilities ensuring the livelihood of communities. According to the official, the issue was discussed in detail during a field operational meeting in the Sumy region.

The meeting was attended by regional leadership, representatives of local self-government, military command, and Defense Forces. Viktor Mykita emphasized that defining gas stations as critical infrastructure objects will allow for the allocation of additional resources for their protection.

### Enemy Attack Objectives

According to authorities, Russia has recently been increasingly striking gas stations in frontline regions. The goal of such actions is to disrupt logistics and the fuel supply of critically important services. Under attack are not only gas stations but also large grocery stores, civilian transport on roads, as well as residential areas.

Despite increased pressure, government representatives state that there is currently no fuel shortage in the country. However, the need for enhanced protection remains acute.

### Strengthening Anti-Drone Defense

In connection with the changing security situation, authorities are also strengthening anti-drone defense in the regions. In the Sumy region, forces of the regional military administration and communities have already protected more than 400 kilometers of roads using special nets. Several hundred more kilometers are in the process of being equipped.

During the meeting, regional military administrations were instructed to jointly with communities increase financial and material-technical support for air defense units. In particular, this concerns equipping crews of unmanned aerial systems and mobile firing groups.

### Situation in the Kharkiv Region

In the Kharkiv region, work is already underway to strengthen the physical protection of gas stations. Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleksandr Synegubov refuted information that there were allegedly no working gas stations left on the Kharkiv-Poltava highway. He emphasized that there is no fuel shortage in the region.

Furthermore, according to Viktor Mykita, a separate package of decisions on additional protection of the Ukrainian sky is being prepared jointly with the military. These measures are designed to minimize risks to civilian objects and maintain the operability of critically important infrastructure.
