# Georgia on the Sidelines: Why Tbilisi Was Not Invited to the NATO Summit in Turkey

In the history of Georgia's relations with the North Atlantic Alliance, a precedent has been set. For the first time in decades, a country traditionally considered a key partner has been completely excluded from the list of invitees to the NATO summit held in Ankara. This event caused a stir in Tbilisi and sparked sharp political debates about the future of the country's foreign policy course.

### A Historic Snub

The summit in Turkey gathered leaders of Alliance member countries, as well as representatives of partner nations not part of the bloc. The official agenda and accompanying forums featured delegations from Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, Australia, as well as Persian Gulf countries — the UAE and Qatar. Even New Zealand received an invitation. However, Georgia was absent from all participant lists.

For Tbilisi, this came as a shock. Over the last ten years, joining NATO has been declared a strategic goal of the Georgian leadership. Now, following a shift in political direction and the rise to power of forces that the opposition calls "pro-Russian," the country finds itself isolated from Western partners.

### Reaction from Authorities and Experts

The ruling party, "Georgian Dream," is attempting to smooth things over. MP Irakli Kirtskhaliya, speaking to the press, stated that Georgia has no problems regarding attendance at the summit and suggested journalists contact the organizers for an explanation as to why the invitation was missing. According to him, there is no isolation, and this is merely a temporary misunderstanding.

However, political analysts and former diplomats do not share the authorities' optimism. Former Georgian Ambassador to NATO Levan Dolidze stated directly that the country is in a state of confrontation with its strategic partners. In his opinion, the status of a "valuable partner" is currently in question due to growing ties with Russia and a change in the rhetoric of official Tbilisi.

"Foreign policy leading to international isolation causes significant harm to our country's national interests," Dolidze emphasized.

### New Strategy and Old Problems

Currently, the Georgian government is trying to change the narrative. Instead of emphasizing military partnership with the West, Tbilisi is positioning itself as an energy bridge between Europe and Asia. However, experts doubt that this move will be able to compensate for the loss of trust from NATO and other Western institutions.

The opposition is convinced: without restoring relations with the West, Georgia will continue to lose geopolitical ground. For now, the country remains on the sidelines of major international processes that determine the future of the region.

### Summit Context: Ukraine and the USA

Against the backdrop of Georgia's absence in Ankara, other significant events unfolded. The summit was attended by the presidents of Ukraine and the USA. Donald Trump stated that Washington is ready to grant Kyiv the right to produce Patriot air defense missile systems. According to him, although the process is technically complex, Ukraine will be able to master the technology quickly.

Trump also noted that Ukraine's long-range strikes on Russian territory could bring the war closer to an end. He acknowledged such actions as escalation but emphasized that, in his opinion, precisely such escalation is capable of pushing the conflict toward a finale.
