German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has officially confirmed that Berlin will allocate €300 million to support the Czech initiative for purchasing artillery ammunition for Ukraine. The announcement was made following a meeting in Berlin with the head of the Czech Ministry of Defence, Jaromír Štětina.

### Details of the agreement and aid volumes

According to Boris Pistorius, the allocated funds will allow the purchase of approximately 50,000 artillery shells for the Ukrainian army. The German Defence Minister described this initiative as an important tool of support and thanked Prague for continuing it. The meeting of the defence ministers of the two countries took place against the backdrop of Germany’s growing role as a key supplier of military equipment and ammunition in Europe.

Jaromír Štětina, commenting on the visit, emphasized: “Germany plays an important role as a supplier of military equipment and ammunition and, together with our defence industry, makes a significant contribution to European security”.

### Germany — the main donor of the initiative

Berlin is the largest foreign sponsor of the Czech program. Last year, Germany already allocated €1 billion for these purposes. Thus, the new funding will continue long-term support, despite changes in the political landscape of Central Europe.

### Political context in the Czech Republic

The Czech initiative for purchasing ammunition was launched in 2024 with the support of then-Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President Petr Pavel. The idea was presented at a meeting of European leaders in February 2024. The essence of the project is to find available large-caliber shells on global markets, purchase them using funds from partner countries, and subsequently deliver them to Ukraine.

However, after the new coalition — ANO, SPD, and the party “Automobilists for Themselves” — came to power, concerns arose about the possible termination of the program. Ultimately, it was decided to maintain the Czech administrative and organizational role, but the state will no longer participate directly in the purchases themselves.

### Reaction of politicians and reduction in the number of participants

Member of Parliament and former head of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský, in an interview with the publication Novinky, called Germany’s decision “excellent news”. He urged Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to reconsider his position and also provide Ukraine with ammunition against Russia.

Czech President Petr Pavel previously warned that the number of countries financing the initiative has been halved — from 18 to 9. This occurred after Andrej Babiš returned to the post of Prime Minister. Nevertheless, Germany’s decision on new funding demonstrates that key European partners continue to support Ukraine through mechanisms created with Czech participation.
