In the world of robotics and aviation, a prototype has emerged capable of challenging human perception. Researchers from Northwestern University (USA) have developed a unique drone called Phantom Twist. Its main feature is the ability to become practically invisible in flight due to extremely high rotation speed.

### The Physics of Invisibility

The operating principle of Phantom Twist differs radically from familiar quadcopters. While standard drones use four rotors for stabilization, the new model gets by with just one motor and one propeller. The secret lies in kinematics: the propeller spins in one direction, while the drone's body spins in the opposite direction.

As a result of this movement, there are no stationary elements in the structure for the observer's eye to catch. The aircraft rotates around its own axis at a frequency of 15 to 25 revolutions per second. Human vision cannot process individual details in time and "averages" the moving parts of the drone with the background behind it. The observer is left with only a barely noticeable blurred spot.

### The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering

Creating such a machine required complex computational work. Engineers had to rely on artificial intelligence algorithms to find the ideal geometry. The AI generated about 20,000 viable configurations, iterating through the placement of the motor, batteries, and circuit board.

The goal was to find a balance between low visibility and adequate flight characteristics. The most promising models were simulated in motion and overlaid on hundreds of real backgrounds. A special visual AI model, simulating the human eye, assessed the visibility of each. From 20,000 options, 500 of the least noticeable designs were selected and then refined into the final version.

### Design Features and Drawbacks

In the final version, the drone's components are located at different heights and at various angles, leaving plenty of free space between them. This prevents solid parts from overlapping each other during rotation, preventing the formation of any recognizable shape. According to researchers, Phantom Twist is about ten times less noticeable than a standard quadcopter of similar size.

However, the current prototype has significant limitations:

    - The drone cannot independently determine its position in space and requires an external optical system for navigation.

    - Exposed wires and carbon fiber support rods remain partially visible.

    - The device maintains a high noise level typical of ordinary drones, allowing it to be detected by ear even if it is visually hidden.

### Future Prospects

Developers plan to eliminate the identified shortcomings in the course of further research. In the future, similar technologies will find application in ecology and industry. Invisible drones could be used for silent observation of animals in the wild, surveying wetlands, and infrastructure inspection. Furthermore, a camera mounted on the rotating body will be able to provide navigation with a 360-degree view.
