- New Jersey and San Jose secured victories in overtimes

On the night of Friday, October 2, 2026, the National Hockey League hosted a series of bright and productive matches that gave fans plenty of emotions. The main event of the game day was the historic achievement of New York Rangers Russian goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who scored a goal in the match against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In addition, the teams pleased with high scoring for every taste, including a real shootout in Canada and stubborn overtimes.

### Igor Shesterkin's Historic Goal

In the central match of the game day, the Rangers confidently defeated Tampa with a score of 5:1. However, the meeting entered history not because of the large advantage of the hosts of the ice, but thanks to the phenomenal act of the Russian goaltender. At the end of the match, Igor Shesterkin intercepted the puck in his own zone and with an accurate shot across the entire ice hit the opponent's empty net. Thus, he became only the 18th goaltender in NHL history to score a goal and deservedly received the status of the first star of the match.

### Goal-Scoring Extravaganza and Other Results

No less spectacular was the match between the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers, where the opponents combined for 16 goals. The Oilers took a convincing revenge for the defeat in the first match of the season, although the hosts of the ice tried to save the game until the last, scoring four goals in the final period. In other matches of the game day, Columbus confidently beat Buffalo (6:3), New Jersey squeezed Philadelphia in overtime (3:2 OT), Minnesota coped with Nashville away (3:1), and San Jose snatched victory from Florida in extra time (4:3 OT).

### Contradictory Data

While the overwhelming majority of sports publications unanimously recorded the Rangers' triumph and Shesterkin's historic achievement with a score of 5:1, some local analytical reviews discussed the exact timing of the final seconds of the match and the nature of the puck's rebound from the boards before the goaltender's shot. However, the official NHL protocol and leading statistical portals fully confirm the legitimacy of the goal and the final numbers on the scoreboard.

### Significance of the Matches for the Start of the Season

The beginning of the NHL regular season demonstrates the highest level of competition and entertainment. Bright victories of favorites, sensational individual achievements of goaltenders like Shesterkin's historic shot, and matches with an abundance of goals set an incredible bar for the entire season. Teams are just rolling into the competitive rhythm, but it is already obvious that fans are in for an exciting and unpredictable hockey year.
