# Golden Dome for America: Pentagon Conducts First Missile Defense System Tests with AI and Lasers

The U.S. Department of Defense has officially confirmed the completion of the first phase of large-scale tests for components of the prospective "Golden Dome" missile defense system. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who personally attended the range as an observer, announced the results of the maneuvers, during which the functionality of new technologies was verified.

The initiative, dubbed "Golden Dome for America," was approved by an executive order from the Donald Trump administration in early 2025. The project sets an ambitious goal: to radically modernize the national defense architecture to protect the continental United States from a wide spectrum of threats — ranging from ballistic and cruise missiles to hypersonic complexes.

### AI Instead of Operators and Directed Energy Weapons

The key difference of the new system from its predecessors is the focus on maximum automation. According to defense media reports and statements from the relevant department, during the simulation of an air raid, artificial intelligence algorithms took over critically important functions. Target distribution, interception trajectory calculations, and firing solution issuance to launchers were carried out in automatic mode. This approach aims to reduce the system's reaction time to a minimum, which is critical when repelling attacks using complex trajectories.

In addition to traditional kinetic interceptor missiles, the tests verified the effectiveness of directed energy complexes. These are prospective systems using high-energy lasers or microwave radiation. The primary task of such installations is the destruction of small targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles flying in the low-altitude layer.

### Network-Centric Architecture and Satellites

Special attention during the exercises was paid to verifying network-centric integration protocols. Developers tested the speed and reliability of data exchange between heterogeneous system nodes: from low-orbit early warning satellite constellations to long-range radar stations (LRDR) and ground-based mobile fire units. Without the coordinated operation of these components, creating a unified protective loop is impossible.

### Budget and International Cooperation

The "Golden Dome" creation program is positioned as a project comparable in scale to the famous Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) of the 1980s, but implemented based on modern commercial space and digital technologies. The general contractor is the Lockheed Martin corporation.

Project financing is carried out through the defense budget. In 2025, approximately $24.4–25 billion was allocated for these purposes. Additionally, within the 2026 budget, another $13.4 billion has been allocated, directed towards the development of the space and missile defense segments of the system.

The project also has an international dimension. According to diplomatic sources, allied states, in particular Japan, plan to join the development and integration of individual elements of the architecture. This is intended to contribute to strengthening regional security in the Asia-Pacific region.

Official Pentagon representatives emphasize that the recent tests were merely a verification of the concept. Before bringing the system to full operational readiness, a series of long-term tests in various physical environments will be required.
