# AI Will Not Replace Humans: Google's Large-Scale Study on the Real-World Use of Gemini

Many fear that artificial intelligence will soon fully automate workflows and displace humans from the labor market. However, a new Google study, which analyzed nearly 15 million interactions with the Gemini model, paints a different picture: AI has not yet become a force capable of replacing humans. Instead, it has firmly established itself as an assistant.

Axios, citing a Google report, notes that the study reveals a significant gap between professions that could theoretically be affected by AI and the actual tasks that people delegate to algorithms.

### Assistant, Not Replacement

The analysis showed that users primarily use Gemini for research, drafting, performing routine operations, troubleshooting technical issues, and learning. People are not inclined to delegate entire complex tasks to AI, preferring to use it as a support tool.

Scott Stroud, an economist at Google's division focused on the societal impact of technology, emphasizes that AI adoption is indeed widespread: the Gemini model is used at 70% of workplaces in the US. Meanwhile, the overall level of artificial intelligence usage in the country covers 90% of employment.

However, according to Stroud, this usage remains "very superficial." The average worker uses AI for only 21% of their tasks. Furthermore, only about 10% of interactions with Gemini are aimed at automating non-routine cognitive work. These data correlate with the results of earlier studies by Anthropic and OpenAI, although the latter reported a slightly higher level of automation.

### Methodology and Scale of the Study

The Google report, titled Activity, Task, Landscape and Adoption Study (ATLAS), is based on an analysis of 14.65 million anonymized user interactions. Data was collected over two weeks in April of this year and includes work with the Gemini app, the Google AI Mode search interface, and the Gemini API.

Systems classified each interaction as work-related or personal. Professional activities were mapped to 4,000 tasks across 800 professions worldwide — in 150 countries and 140 languages. Non-work tasks were linked to categories used in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics study.

It is important to note a limitation of the study: it did not account for the use of business-oriented models, such as Gemini Enterprise and Google Workspace, as the company does not keep logs for these products. Scott Stroud acknowledged that having this data might show a higher level of automation, but access to it is currently unavailable.

### Who and How AI Is Used

The study revealed an interesting correlation between income and technology usage. Workers in high-paying positions and residents of wealthier regions use AI more frequently. Google notes that a 1% increase in median earnings in a certain profession correlates with a 2.68% increase in AI usage levels.

However, an unexpected finding was the active use of AI by blue-collar workers. Electricians use it to find schematics, while mechanics use it to get information about engines. Stroud notes that these specialists actively use multimodal AI that works with images and video.

Consumer use of AI also turned out to be broader than expected. About 86% of all interactions with Gemini are for questions unrelated to work. People use AI not only for household tasks, such as cooking or cleaning, but also for navigating government services and resolving administrative procedures.

Google plans to make ATLAS the first in a series of similar studies, although the frequency of publishing updates has not yet been determined. For now, the data suggests that AI is integrating into people's lives as a powerful assistant, rather than as a complete replacement for human labor.
