# NATO's Baltic Fortress: How Gotland is Being Turned into a Shield Against Russia

In the heart of the Baltic Sea, just 300 kilometers from Russia's Kaluga region, a major military drama is unfolding. Gotland, once a quiet archipelago, is now becoming a key element of NATO's defensive strategy. Sweden and its allies are urgently transforming this territory into an impregnable fortress, ready to repel a potential Russian attack.

### Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier

Gotland's strategic importance is hard to overstate. Experts call it an "unsinkable aircraft carrier": from its territory, fighter jets can reach any Baltic capital in minutes. Controlling the island means de facto dominance in the region. If Russia were to seize Gotland, it could block supplies to allies and cut off sea access. Conversely, by holding the island, NATO can deny Moscow access to the Baltic and strike deep into enemy territory.

### Lessons from Exercises and New Threats

Recently, the first large-scale NATO-led exercises concluded on the island following Sweden's accession to the alliance. 18,000 servicemen from 13 countries practiced scenarios for repelling an invasion. However, the exercises also revealed worrying signs. The US reduced its participation, which, against the backdrop of Donald Trump's rhetoric, raises concerns about future support for Europe. Moreover, Ukrainian troops, demonstrating mastery in drone warfare, quickly "destroyed" a Swedish armored group, highlighting the vulnerability of traditional equipment.

### Hybrid Warfare is Already Here

The threat to Gotland is not limited to open invasion. In the last 18 months, the island has become a target for hybrid attacks: sabotage of water pumps, severing of underwater cables, and constant radio interference. Experts note an increase in espionage and sabotage activities. Amid uncertainty regarding the American factor, Russia may perceive this as an opportunity to intensify pressure.

### Mobilization and Modernization

Sweden is actively restoring its military presence on the island, reversing post-war reductions. Over €200 million has been invested in infrastructure. A regiment equipped with Leopard 2 tanks and CV90 armored vehicles has been revived. By 2028, new IRIS-T air defense systems will be deployed on Gotland. The regiment commander promises to increase the number of rotational troops to 1,000 within a year.

Gotland is becoming a testing ground for multinational cooperation. Canadian and Danish soldiers, Finnish fighters, British snipers, and US Marines are training here. Sweden's accession to NATO has allowed for a complete overhaul of defense plans, turning the island into one of the alliance's most critical frontlines.
