The Greek island of Syros, located in the Aegean Sea, has become a place where a love for animals can become the key to a free trip. The local animal welfare organization Syroscats has announced a recruitment drive for volunteers for 2027, offering a unique barter: caring for stray cats in exchange for comfortable accommodation.

### Terms of the Unusual Contract

According to information published by the German edition of Bild, the conditions for future volunteers look extremely attractive. The organizers cover all major expenses: volunteers receive free accommodation, daily breakfast, and payment of utility bills. In return, they are required to invest about five hours a day, five days a week, in caring for local cats.

It is important to note that this is not paid work in the classical sense. Financial remuneration is not provided; however, after fulfilling their duties in caring for the animals, volunteers have complete freedom to dispose of their time, traveling around the island as ordinary tourists.

### Who the Organizers Are Looking For

Application submission starts in September. Syroscats is looking for singles or couples over the age of 25. Candidates must be ready to stay on the island for a minimum of one month and possess the skills for independent work.

People with experience as veterinary assistants or those who have already dealt with caring for stray animals are of particular interest. However, the organization is also open to simple cat lovers ready to dedicate themselves to this noble mission.

### Why Syros?

The island of Syros is considered one of the least crowded tourist destinations in Greece. This makes it an ideal place for those seeking tranquility. The island retains beautiful architecture, has picturesque beaches, cozy bays, as well as numerous cafes and restaurants where one can relax after a working day.

### Trend of Populating Small Territories

The initiative on Syros is not an isolated case in Europe. Authorities in the region are actively looking for ways to prevent the depopulation of small settlements. Previously, Greek authorities announced an "official search" for permanent residents on the island of Andikira in the Ionian Sea. Those willing to move there were promised a house, a plot of land, and a monthly payment of 500 euros for the first three years.

Similar offers have also come from Italy. In the Tuscany region, local authorities offered up to 30,000 euros to those wishing to settle in one of dozens of small towns, striving to preserve the population and revitalize the economy of these territories.
