# GTA 6 and PlayStation 5: Rockstar introduces strict regional locking for activation codes

Expectations surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto VI have reached a peak, and a year before the launch scheduled for November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games has announced important details regarding the game's distribution. The studio confirmed that the physical medium in its traditional form will disappear: instead of discs in boxes, special download codes will be provided. However, for PlayStation 5 console owners, this distribution format comes with significant limitations.

### Strict regional locking on PS5

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the introduction of strict regional locking for GTA 6 activation codes on the PlayStation 5 platform. This means that the country of purchase for the code must exactly match the region of the PlayStation Network account. If a player purchases a boxed version in one country but attempts to activate it on an account from another country, the game will not launch.

Unlike Sony, Microsoft has not introduced similar barriers. Owners of Xbox Series X and Series S consoles will be able to activate digital copies of the game from any country without any hindrance. This opens up the possibility for Xbox users to purchase codes from foreign stores, taking advantage of local discounts and exchange rates.

### Geography of restrictions

The company has divided retail codes for PS5 into several key markets to ensure compliance with regional policy:

- **Europe:** United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine, and other supported countries.

- **Asia:** Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and other markets.

- **Latin America:** Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and other countries in the region.

- **Japan:** Categorized separately. Due to the specifics of local legislation, the validity period of Japanese codes expires 170 days after release.

### Problems for PlayStation fans

This decision creates serious difficulties for many players. Traditionally, gamers often registered accounts in other countries to take advantage of lower prices or purchased games via import. Since Sony officially does not allow changing the region of an existing PSN profile, a mistake in purchasing a code will lead to a complete inability to activate the game.

The only legal solution for PlayStation 5 owners is to create additional accounts linked to the corresponding regions. However, this process is not always convenient and requires extra effort from the user, which could become a stumbling block before the grand release of one of the most anticipated games of the decade.
