# Heat turns the 'Varshavka' highway into a dangerous ramp: how anomalous temperatures are destroying Ukraine's roads

Anomalous heat sweeping across Ukraine has caused serious problems on one of the country's key transport arteries. Drivers traveling along the M-07 Kyiv — Kovel — Yagodyn highway are warned of danger: extreme temperatures have caused dangerous deformations on the road resembling "ramps".

### Thermal expansion and concrete destruction

According to the Service for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure in the Zhytomyr region, the cause of the incidents is extremely high thermometer readings. The concrete pavement of the highway cannot withstand the load: the slabs deform, shift, and rise sharply due to thermal expansion. This creates a real threat to traffic safety.

Officials from the agency emphasized that the condition of the road surface is under constant control. All identified damages are being eliminated by contracting organizations in the shortest possible time. However, road workers warn that the danger will persist as long as the heatwave continues.

### Weather forecast: peak temperatures in early July

The situation is exacerbated by meteorologists' forecasts. The highest temperatures are expected on July 1 and 2. In the southern and western regions of the country, the air will heat up to +36...+38 degrees. It is during this period that the load on the road surface will be maximum.

To minimize damage during hot days, restrictions on the movement of heavy transport continue to be in effect in Ukraine. Such measures are designed to protect asphalt and concrete from premature destruction under the wheels of trucks.

### Strategic importance of the M-07 highway

The international highway M-07, also known as "Varshavka", is a critically important route. It connects the capital of Ukraine with the western border and the Yagodyn border crossing point. The highway passes through the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Rivne, and Volyn regions and is part of the European road network as part of the E373 route.

The road is of great importance for international freight transport and transit to EU countries, as well as being actively used for passenger and tourist traffic. Any disruptions on its surface can lead to serious logistical delays.

### Regional safety measures

The problem of road destruction due to heat is not limited to the Zhytomyr region. Thus, in Kyiv, the movement of large-sized cargo transport has also been temporarily restricted. The ban concerns trucks with certain parameters and was introduced specifically to protect the road surface from destruction at high temperatures.

Meteorologists have previously warned about the peak of the heat and named the regions where it will be hottest on the last day of June. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and pay close attention to road signs and messages from road maintenance services.
