### Heatstroke hits the healthcare system

France's National Public Health Agency (Santé publique France) has released shocking preliminary data: between June 24 and 28, 2026, the country recorded approximately 1,000 excess deaths directly linked to abnormally high temperatures. The climate crisis spares no one, but the primary burden has fallen on citizens over the age of 65. Official authorities warn: current figures are merely the "tip of the iceberg" and will be revised upwards as reports from nursing homes (EHPAD) and civil registry offices are consolidated.

### Peak indicators and "red" zones

To understand the scale of the tragedy, one must look at the baseline figures. In typical spring months, daily mortality in France ranges between 900 and 1,000 cases. However, during the peak of the heatwave, these numbers were shattered. On Wednesday, June 24, more than 1,200 fatalities were registered, and for the following two days, the figure exceeded 1,400 cases daily.

The most critical situation developed in departments where the meteorological service Météo-France declared the maximum "red" danger level. The following areas fell into the special risk zone:

- The Île-de-France capital region (Paris and suburbs);
- New Aquitaine;
- Brittany;
- Normandy;
- Pays de la Loire;
- Centre — Val de Loire.

### Tragedy in isolation

Data from the Paris emergency medical service (SAMU) paints a grim picture. On Saturday, June 27 alone, 80 fatalities were recorded, 30 of which were due to cardiac arrest. The day before, this figure was even higher — 109 cases. Experts note an alarming trend: in the capital region, mortality at home increased by 40%. This is linked to the factor of social isolation of elderly people living alone, trapped in apartments amidst dense urban development and a lack of air conditioning.

### Response measures and restrictions

In response to the crisis, French authorities activated powers under the Sanitary Risk Management Instruction. Relevant departments were granted the right to impose strict local restrictions: suspending the operation of educational institutions and banning outdoor labor. Budgetary appropriations are being urgently redistributed in favor of medical services.

Health Minister Stéphane Rist stated that, despite a local temperature drop following a thunderstorm front (more than 127,000 lightning strikes were recorded), the healthcare system will continue to face colossal pressure for another 7–10 days due to delayed complications in patients with chronic diseases. In Paris, the overcrowding of the two largest funeral homes forced the administration to deploy temporary refrigerated modules.

### European scale of the problem

France is not the only victim of climate change. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), cumulative excess mortality in the European region since June 21 has already exceeded 1,300 cases. Of these, more than 210 victims were recorded in Spain. Experts state: heatwaves have ceased to be anomalies and have become annual systemic challenges for the economies and healthcare systems of the entire continent.
