The European Green Party has called for an extraordinary summit of European Union leaders. The reason for this urgent convening is an unprecedented heatwave sweeping across a significant portion of the continent, posing a serious challenge to healthcare systems and infrastructure.

Party representatives insist that heads of state must immediately discuss measures to protect the population from extreme temperatures. Furthermore, they propose including issues related to strengthening the bloc's climate policy on the agenda to prevent similar situations in the future.

### Record Highs and Health Risks

This week, Western European countries have faced abnormally high temperatures. In several states, thermometers showed readings approaching 40 degrees Celsius, and in some regions, this threshold was exceeded. However, experts are most concerned not only by the daytime heat but also by the high nighttime temperatures.

Meteorologists note that the lack of nighttime cooling critically increases health risks for people, especially the elderly and those with limited mobility. Forecasts suggest that in the coming days, the heatwave will shift eastward, covering Poland and other Central European countries.

### Consequences: From School Closures to Casualties

The impact of extreme weather has already become tangible for the daily lives of millions of Europeans. In France, thousands of schools were forced to close due to unbearable heat to ensure children's safety. In Italy and Spain, authorities have already reported casualties whose deaths were triggered by overheating.

Problems have also arisen in logistics and energy sectors. Transport infrastructure is experiencing overloads, while power grids are operating at their limits due to the mass use of air conditioners. Meteorologists compare the current situation to one of the most tragic weather events in modern European history.

### Political Context and Criticism of EU Course

The Green Party emphasizes that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense against the backdrop of global climate change. In this regard, the party has harshly criticized recent steps by the European Union aimed at weakening certain elements of the 'European Green Deal'.

In the politicians' view, attempts to support economic competitiveness by simplifying environmental standards are mistaken in the context of the climate crisis. Notably, at the last European Council summit held in Brussels on June 18–19, issues of extreme heat and adaptation to climate changes were not included in the main agenda.

### Forecast for Ukraine

The heatwave has not spared Eastern European countries either. Starting Friday, June 26, significant warming is expected in Ukraine. The weekend will bring heat from Western Europe, covering almost the entire territory of the country. Meteorologists forecast temperatures rising to +37 degrees and higher.
