# Historic breakthrough: Ukraine men's volleyball team reaches the Nations League playoffs for the first time

The Ukrainian men's volleyball team has achieved a true historic breakthrough. For the first time in its history, the national team managed to overcome the group stage barrier and secure a spot in the playoffs of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League. This feat was made possible thanks to a fierce battle on the final day of the group round and a fortunate turn of events in parallel matches.

### Dramatic conclusion to the group stage

The fate of participation in the decisive round was decided at the very last moment. For the Ukrainians to advance, they not only had to defeat their opponent themselves but also rely on the result of the match between the Bulgarian and French teams. The reigning Olympic champions from France fulfilled their task, crushing the Bulgarian team with a score of 3:0 (25:21, 25:22, 25:21). This result automatically secured Ukraine a place in the top 8.

The "blue and yellows" also fulfilled their task, defeating the German national team. By the end of the group round, a unique situation had arisen: three teams—Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Brazil—finished with the same number of wins (7). However, the Ukrainians managed to outpace their competitors thanks to a higher number of points accumulated throughout the tournament (23 points) and held their place in the top seven.

### Sensations and mature play

The tournament path in 2026 became a time of blossoming for the Ukrainian team. The volleyball players demonstrated mature play and created several loud, planetary-scale sensations. To their credit are victories over world giants, such as the Italian and Brazilian national teams.

In the final round, the Ukrainians will play in elite company. In addition to our team, Japan, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, the USA, and Turkey have advanced to the playoffs. The Chinese team reached the Final Eight by virtue of being the host of the final stage.

### The second chance proved decisive

This is only Ukraine's second campaign in the Nations League. Last year, our team stopped a step away from the final: with 6 wins, the Ukrainians lacked just two points to advance further. This time, the historic threshold has been overcome, and the team has received a chance to prove its status in the fight for the tournament's main trophy.
