As part of the prestigious Volleyball Nations League (VNL), the Ukrainians secured their first, crucially important victory, overcoming the resistance of the experienced German team. The second-round match turned into a real drama, concluding only in the fifth, decisive set. ### Score 3:2 and the price of victory The match, played in a super-dramatic fashion, ended with a score of 3:2 in favor of the "blue and yellows." The set scores were as follows: 25:21, 30:28, 14:25, 19:25, 15:13. For the Ukrainian team, the 2026 season became historic: for the first time in history, the national team competed at such a high level. Prior to this match, the Ukrainians had started the tournament with a loss to the favorites from the USA (0:3), while the Germans, who reached the quarterfinals last year, started with a confident victory over Canada. ### The path to victory: from blitzkrieg to comeback The Ukrainians started the match in a blitzkrieg style, stunning their opponents from the first minutes. Already at the halfway point of the first set, the lead reached six points (15:9), which allowed them to calmly close out the Germans and win the set 25:21. The second set almost became a "cold shower": the Ukrainians were hopelessly behind with a score of 4:10. However, the team under head coach Yakub Hlushak achieved an incredible comeback. The team restored parity and won on "deuce" β€” 30:28, taking the lead in the set count. ### The favorite's response and the epic tie-breaker With the score at 0:2 in sets, the favorite woke up. The third set passed entirely under the dictation of the German team, which executed a +11 run and won 25:14. The pattern of play did not change in the fourth segment either: the Germans maintained a distance of 3-6 points and forced the match into a decisive fifth set (25:19). The fifth set turned into a real "seesaw," where the teams did not let each other lead by more than two points. Trailing 7:9, the Ukrainians took three rallies in a row and were the first to approach match point (14:13). The prolonged and exhausting final rally on Marta Fedyk's serve ended with an "ironclad" block by our girls, which put the golden point to the match β€” 15:13! ### Match heroes and tournament prospects The diagonal player Alexandra Milenko made the greatest contribution to the historic success, scoring 22 points (the same as the German leader Leana Grozer). Victoria Danchak added another 17 points, while the central blocker Diana Meliushkina brought 11 points to the team. Thanks to this victory, the Ukrainian team rose to 12th place in the overall standings of the main round.
