# Hungary opposes: Budapest will not support EU initiative to cancel protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age

Hungary has officially stated its disagreement with the European Commission's proposals regarding changes to temporary protection rules for Ukrainian citizens. Budapest does not intend to support the initiative, which involves stripping protection status from Ukrainian men of conscription age who do not have permission to leave the country.

### Debate in the Hungarian Parliament

The discussion was triggered by an initiative from the European Commission on June 26. During a parliamentary session, László Toroczkai, a member of the 'Mi Hazánk' party, raised the issue of the potential consequences of this proposal. The deputy pointed out that the new rules could affect not only Ukrainian citizens but also ethnic Hungarians living in Zakarpattia.

According to Toroczkai, the implementation of the Brussels plan could lead to men being sent to a front line located more than a thousand kilometers from their homes. The deputy used an emotional formulation, calling such a prospect turning people into 'cannon fodder', and urged the Hungarian government to oppose this initiative.

### Position of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán answered questions from MPs, confirming that the country's position had already been voiced at the international level. At the meeting of the EU Council on Home Affairs in Luxembourg, the Hungarian Minister of Interior, Gábor Pálvölgyi, stated that Budapest, along with six or seven other states, does not support the European Commission's proposal.

Orbán emphasized that even if new rules are adopted at the EU level and come into force around March 2027, this will not limit Hungary's sovereign rights. The country will retain the ability to independently grant refugee status to people arriving in Hungary to escape war or mobilization.

"Every Hungarian compatriot can count on the government of Tisza, both here and abroad," the Prime Minister assured, addressing the national issue.

### Context of changes in the EU

Previously, EU countries discussed the expediency of revoking temporary protection for men of conscription age after 2027. The proposed changes were supposed to affect two categories of citizens, however, Hungary's position demonstrates that a consensus on this issue within the bloc has not yet been reached.
