# IAEA records consequences of drone strike on Zaporizhzhia NPP: damage to the building and safety threat

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted an inspection at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and recorded physical damage to the exterior of the turbine hall of Unit 6. According to the agency, traces of destruction confirm a strike by an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) that occurred on May 30.

### Traces of the strike and radiation levels

During the site tour, IAEA experts discovered specific damage to a metal hatch located on the upper floor of the building. Debris and burnt remains of fiber optic cable were also found on the ground. These findings serve as direct confirmation that the facility was subjected to an aerial attack.

Despite the difficult situation, the expert group managed to conduct measurements. Using specialized equipment, it was established that radiation levels at the time of inspection were within normal limits. The agency has submitted a request for access to the interior of the building located near Unit 6 to conduct a more detailed examination of the incident's consequences.

### Risk of escalation and the IAEA leadership's position

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the incident serious, stating that it threatens key principles of nuclear safety. In his statement, he emphasized that attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable and must be stopped immediately. Grossi warned of a very real risk of a nuclear accident, which would benefit none of the parties involved in the conflict.

During the inspection, the observer group was forced to suspend work and take shelter due to drone activity and gunfire in the vicinity of the plant. This indicates a high level of tension around the facility.

### Positions of the conflicting parties

The Russian management of ZNPP, whose Telegram channel published a statement on May 31, claimed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to attack the plant's facilities. According to their data, the new strike hit the transport workshop. As a result, it is claimed that six buses and two "Gazelle" vans were destroyed. The statement noted that there were no casualties among the staff, and the plant continues to operate in normal mode under full control of technological parameters.

For their part, the Southern Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine denied information about a strike on the ZNPP turbine hall. In a statement published on Facebook, the Ukrainian side emphasized that they did not strike Unit 6. The military stated that their actions are carried out exclusively within the norms of international humanitarian law, with full awareness of the consequences of any actions regarding nuclear facilities.

Meanwhile, Moscow has previously accused Kyiv of attempting to use ZNPP as a tool for nuclear blackmail and conducting information provocations. The incident with the drone strike and the subsequent IAEA inspection have once again brought the issue of safety of Europe's largest nuclear power plant to the center of international attention.
