# Instagram introduces manual post sorting: how to rearrange your profile grid

The era of strict chronological order in Instagram is over. Meta has officially launched the long-awaited feature that allows users to manually change the order of posts in their profile grid. Now, the upload date no longer dictates the visual hierarchy of content: any post can be moved to the desired location with a simple drag-and-drop action.

### How the new sorting feature works

The process of rearranging your profile is maximally simplified and available in the mobile app. To change the layout of your content, the user simply needs to perform a few intuitive steps:

- Go to the main page of your profile.

- Long-press on the post you want to move.

- In the context menu that appears, select the **Reorder grid** option.

- In the special editing mode, hold the desired post and drag it to a new position.

Changes are saved instantly and immediately become visible to all account visitors. At the same time, the content metadata remains untouched: original publication dates, text captions, and engagement statistics (likes and comments) are not reset or distorted.

### New opportunities for business and creators

The introduction of this feature radically changes the approach to managing accounts, especially those used as digital portfolios or brand showcases. Now, audience attention management has become a flexible tool.

Creators, photographers, and artists now have the ability to bring their best or viral works from past years to the forefront without resorting to meaningless re-uploading of files. Commercial accounts have the chance to group posts for specific seasonal sales or advertising campaigns, and after the promo actions are over, easily return the profile to its previous look.

### Limitations and technical details

Despite the freedom provided, there is an important rule in the system regarding the Pin to main grid feature. Posts that the user previously pinned to the very top of the page remain stationary. In editing mode, such images are displayed dimmed, and it is impossible to drag other media files above them. Free sorting applies exclusively to the content array located below the pinned block.

Interestingly, the first mentions of the development of this technology, named *Edit Grid*, were found by enthusiasts in the app code as early as 2022. Meta representatives admitted that the launch of the tool was significantly delayed, but the company aimed to thoroughly test the algorithms so that the feature would work without glitches on millions of devices.

At the moment, the sorting capability is limited to the mobile version of the app and is not available when viewing the social network through desktop browsers.
