# Interception without warning: how the Il-20 violated flight rules over the Baltic

A new incident has erupted over the Baltic Sea, causing alarm in the Polish command. A Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted by Polish Air Force fighters for violating air traffic rules. The incident occurred in the first half of the day in an area located approximately 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Łeba.

### Flight into a "blind zone"

According to Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Russian aircraft was flying without an approved flight plan and with its transponder turned off. This equipment is critical for aviation safety: it automatically transmits data on the aircraft's coordinates, altitude, and speed to ground controllers and other vessels. The absence of a transponder signal effectively makes the aircraft "invisible" to control systems, creating a direct risk of collision.

A duty pair of Polish fighters was scrambled to identify and escort the intruder. An official representative of the defense ministry emphasized that Polish airspace was not violated; however, the actions of the Russian aircraft in international airspace were deemed provocative.

### Series of incidents: escalation in the Baltic

This case is not isolated. Over the past month, the situation in the Baltic Sea has remained tense, and the activity of Russian military aircraft in the region has noticeably increased:

    - **July 31:** A Russian Il-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft again flew over the Baltic without a flight plan and transponder.

    - **July 15:** Two Russian Su-30SM2 fighters approached the area where Polish air defense exercises were being conducted.

    - **July 14:** Another Il-20 approached the borders of Polish airspace, which also required fighters to be scrambled for interception.

Polish military experts note that Russia has apparently changed its tactics in the region. The activity of reconnaissance aircraft and fighters is aimed at detailed monitoring of NATO exercises and preparation for possible provocations. Warsaw states that the country's Armed Forces are in a state of constant readiness and will take all necessary measures to protect state borders.
