# Iran Blocks Oman's Peace Plan: Demands on the Strait of Hormuz Threaten Negotiations with the US

Hopes for a swift resumption of dialogue between Tehran and Washington are now under threat. Iran has officially rejected Oman's proposal to establish a system of equal control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Instead of a compromise, the Iranian side has issued ultimatum-style demands which, according to mediators, make further negotiations on a ceasefire impossible.

### Failure of Diplomatic Initiative

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing its own sources, Oman, whose territories are in immediate proximity to the strait, launched an initiative for de-escalation. The interim plan proposed the creation of equal control zones over the waterway for both sides. This step was taken against the backdrop of a lull in the exchange of strikes between Iran and the US, which began last Friday.

Diplomats were considering the possibility of moving to discuss a 10-day ceasefire regime. However, Tehran categorically rejected the idea of parity. Kazem Garibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that the Omani plan "does not solve Iran's security problems".

### Tehran's Ultimatum

Instead of the equal distribution of routes proposed by Oman, Iran put forward its own conditions. According to the Iranian plan, the inbound shipping route must be under the full control of Tehran. At the same time, part of the outbound route, according to Garibabadi, could remain under Oman's control.

"If they accept this proposal, we will move to the next stage," the Iranian diplomat emphasized. He noted that Tehran would proceed to discuss other issues only if Oman agrees to Iranian terms.

### US Position and Reaction of Mediators

Representatives of the mediating countries expressed outrage at Iran's rejection of the compromise plan. In Washington, Tehran's demands were called unfounded. An American source, commenting on the situation, noted that Iran is "exceeding its authority".

"The strait is an international waterway, and Iran cannot control or restrict transit through it," the US stated.

Iranian officials, in turn, justify their position by the need for security. According to them, US military groups passed through the strait which were used to attack Iranian territory, making it impossible to trust the neutral status of the waterway under current conditions.
