Tehran has officially announced the suspension of all obligations under the agreement with the United States, which was intended to ensure a ceasefire. This was stated by Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Hozeyn Gharibabadi, on state television. According to him, the initiative to sabotage the agreement came from the American side, which took aggressive actions in response to events in the Strait of Hormuz.

### The collapse of the June memorandum

In June, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Iran and the US. The document ended weeks of hostilities and created conditions for detailed negotiations on key issues, including Tehran's nuclear program. However, as Gharibabadi admitted, the peaceful settlement process collapsed after the exchange of strikes between the two countries began.

"We were negotiating. Unfortunately, it was the Americans who took these aggressive actions, violating their own commitments. As a result, we have suspended the fulfillment of all our obligations and are effectively no longer carrying them out," the Iranian diplomat emphasized.

### Deadlock in negotiations and Tehran's position

The statement by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran was another signal that diplomatic efforts conducted with the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan have reached a deadlock. Gharibabadi summarized that Tehran's main task now is the defense of the country, and it will be resolved "firmly and decisively".

This position was confirmed earlier this week by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghai. He told journalists that Iran has no plans to resume negotiations, as the country is focused exclusively on its defense amid ongoing aggression.

### Reason for escalation: The Strait of Hormuz

The root of the current crisis was an incident in the first half of July, when Iran attacked a vessel attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran stated that the container ship was moving along an unauthorized route. However, according to media reports, the real reason for the conflict was US lobbying for ships to pass along the coast of Oman rather than Iranian territory.

US President Donald Trump previously stated that the ceasefire effectively ended after the attack on the vessel. Shortly thereafter, Washington launched a retaliatory strike on targets in Iran, after which mutual shelling resumed and has been occurring almost daily.

### Blockades and the threat of a protracted conflict

The situation in the region continues to escalate. Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, while the US has resumed the blockade of Iranian ports. Experts at Axios note that the White House is preparing for a scenario of a multi-day or even multi-week exchange of strikes between the two sides over control of the strategic strait.
