# Iranian Missiles Hit UAE Tankers: Casualties, Fires, and the Threat of a New Maritime Blockade

A major incident has occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, becoming one of the most serious in recent months. Iranian cruise missiles struck two tankers flying the UAE flag — the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah. The attack took place in the southern part of the strait, within the territorial waters of Oman, where the vessels were located at the time of the strike.

According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, one crew member was killed as a result of the attack — he was aboard the tanker Mombasa. Eight others were injured, four of them in critical condition. Among the victims are six Indian citizens and two Ukrainian citizens.

Intense fires broke out on both vessels, producing thick black smoke and engulfing a significant portion of the deck. Firefighting teams from other ships and coastal services began extinguishing the blaze, and by the time of the report, the fire was partially contained. However, the damage from the attack remains colossal, both in human and material terms.

The UAE described the incident as an "outright attack" and declared its right to respond to the escalation. Emirate authorities emphasized that they will not tolerate a recurrence of such incidents and will act within the framework of international law.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran confirmed the operation, stating that it disabled two "vessels violating rules." According to Tehran, the ships ignored warnings and attempted to pass through a route that had been pre-mined. Iran accused the United States of inciting the vessels to violate safety regulations in the strait.

It is worth recalling that both sides — Iran and the UAE — had previously signed a framework agreement for a 60-day ceasefire. However, despite this, attacks continued. Prior to this, the US announced strikes on 90 military targets in Iran, which served as a response to a series of provocations in the region.

US President Donald Trump announced the restoration of a maritime blockade on Iran. Washington aims to take control of the Strait of Hormuz — a key hub for global oil trade — and plans to levy a 20% tariff on all vessels passing through it. This decision could provoke a sharp reaction from Iran and other countries dependent on stability in the region.

According to Axios, the White House is preparing for a prolonged confrontation with Iran. The administration acknowledges that the exchange of strikes around the strait could last for several days or even weeks. The situation remains extremely tense, and the risk of further escalation persists.

### Consequences for International Trade

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important maritime routes in the world. Approximately 20% of the world's oil supplies pass through it daily. Any disruption of security in this region immediately affects global markets. Even after the first reports of the attack, oil prices began to rise, and logistics companies started reviewing their shipping routes.

### International Reaction

The US, EU, and other countries have expressed concern over the situation. The UN has called on the parties to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue. However, no concrete steps toward de-escalation have been taken so far. The region is on the brink of a new crisis that could affect not only the Middle East but also the global economy.
