The issue of the security of Iran's nuclear program has once again become the center of attention for global analysts. A new study published in the scientific journal SciAM indicates that the underground facility under Mount Pikaks (Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La) may be practically invulnerable to modern munitions. It turns out that nature itself has created a reliable shield for Tehran, which could render the efforts of even the most powerful US bunker-busting bombs ineffective.

### Geology as the Main Weapon of Defense

Mount Pikaks, located 220 kilometers south of Tehran, is not just a rocky elevation but a complex geological mass. The mountain's height reaches almost 1610 meters above sea level. The massif was formed millions of years ago due to tectonic shifts and is part of the Zagros mountain range.

The key factor causing concern among military experts is the composition of the rocks. The volcanic rocks that make up the mountain possess unique properties capable of significantly reducing the effectiveness of the shockwave. According to estimates by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), the underground complex is located at a depth of at least 100 meters beneath the mountain's surface.

### The Myth of the GBU-57's Omnipotence

In recent years, the name of the American bunker-busting bomb GBU-57 has frequently appeared in Western media. This munition, weighing more than 12 tons, is considered one of the most powerful in the Pentagon's arsenal. However, new data forces a re-evaluation of its actual capabilities.

According to calculations, the bomb is capable of penetrating about 7.9 meters of rock of medium hardness. This figure becomes critically important when considering the facility under Mount Pikaks. If the centrifuges for uranium enrichment are indeed located at a depth of 100 meters under an andesite shield, then the GBU-57 will be absolutely ineffective. The difference between the bomb's penetration capability and the depth of the facility represents a safety margin of more than 10 times in favor of the defense.

### Tehran's Strategy: Concentration and Security

Construction work on the facility began approximately in 2020. Experts view this complex as a strategic replacement for the Natanz facility, which was previously damaged by a sabotage attack. Farzin Nadimi, a senior research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, notes that Tehran aims to concentrate future uranium enrichment and weapons development in a single, maximally protected location.

In Nadimi's opinion, Mount Pikaks is a logical candidate for this role. Consolidating critical assets in one place, protected by natural barriers, allows Iran to minimize risks from pinpoint strikes.

### Doubts About the Feasibility of an Attack

Currently, the exact dates for the commissioning of the complex remain unknown. This creates a dilemma for potential attackers. Analysts question the feasibility of launching airstrikes on a "practically impregnable mountain" where a full-fledged nuclear facility may not yet be operational.

Thus, the combination of complex geology, significant depth, and the uncertainty of the facility's status makes Pikaks one of the most complex challenges for military intelligence and operational planning in the region.
