# Iron instead of men: how the Ukrainian Vepr robot is changing the rules of evacuation on the front line

On the front line, where the cost of a mistake is measured in human lives, a quiet but fundamental revolution is taking place. The arsenal of medical evacuation equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been replenished with a new unit of equipment — the Vepr (Boar) ground logistics and evacuation robotic complex. This is not just another drone, but a full-fledged combat platform designed to take on the most dangerous tasks of rescuing the wounded and delivering cargo.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Vepr is a domestic development, the first models of which have already begun their service on the front line since 2024. However, what we see today is the result of serious evolution. The developers did not just create a prototype, but carefully studied real combat experience and feedback from defenders to substantially modernize the platform for the actual and harsh needs of the front.

### Technical specifications: power in a compact body

The new Vepr complex is designed to be an effective tool in conditions of complex terrain and minefields. The platform has impressive but balanced dimensions: the length is 136 cm, the width is 112 cm, and the height with the equipment stand is 138 cm.

Despite a combat weight of about 350 kg, the robot demonstrates high load capacity, capable of transporting loads of similar mass. This allows it not only to evacuate wounded soldiers but also to deliver ammunition and food to "pockets" of encirclement.

The "heart" of the machine consists of two electric motors with a power of 1.5 kW each. They accelerate the platform to a speed of 7.5 km/h, which is sufficient for operational maneuvering in combat conditions. The autonomy of the complex is also impressive: the battery capacity is enough for a range of almost 40 kilometers without recharging.

### Digital eye and communication

Vepr is equipped with modern digital cameras, providing the operator with full control over the situation. The presence of several types of communication guarantees that the robot will not lose control even in conditions of dense electronic countermeasures. This is critically important for performing tasks in real time, when every second counts.

### Scale of implementation: from thousands to tens of thousands

The introduction of robotic systems into the logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is gaining momentum. According to the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian ground robotic complexes are already performing about 10,000 evacuation and logistics tasks monthly. This number is growing with each month.

The authorities of the country have announced ambitious plans to scale production. In the first half of 2026, the government plans to contract more than 25,000 such complexes. For comparison, this is twice as much as was planned for the entire year of 2025. The key goal of this program is to transfer up to 100% of front-line logistics to unmanned robotic platforms, minimizing risks for the personnel.

### New tactics: victory without infantry

The effectiveness of robots is already being confirmed in practice. Recently, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were able to take control of an enemy position exclusively with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles and ground robotic complexes for the first time. Infantrymen did not participate in this operation, which demonstrates a fundamentally new level of conducting hostilities.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, also confirmed the growth in the effectiveness of the use of equipment. According to him, in March, robotic complexes performed 50% more tasks than in February. The statistics are relentless: "iron" is becoming the main hero of modern war, taking on functions that were previously performed by living people.
