# Israel's Micro-Air Force: How Drones Are Changing the Rules of the Game in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are undergoing the most significant technological transformation in their history. In southern Lebanon, amidst complex terrain and dense vegetation, traditional warfare methods are giving way to new realities. In response to the threat posed by Hezbollah, Israeli ground forces are forming unique "micro-air force" units that are integrated directly into infantry ranks.

### From Auxiliary Tool to Independent Force

Until recently, drones were viewed merely as an auxiliary element of reconnaissance. Today, the situation has changed drastically: every field unit now has its own aerial capabilities. The Drone School of the Northern Command has become a training ground for these new formations. Dozens of reserve commands are already using drones directly on the front lines, turning UAV operation into a separate, highly specialized profession.

As military experts note, modern units can now independently solve tasks that previously required the involvement of aviation or artillery: from target identification and fire adjustment to dropping munitions and controlling heavy aircraft.

### Complex Terrain and the FPV Threat

The geography of southern Lebanon — deep valleys and thick undergrowth — creates ideal conditions for ambushes and fighter camouflage. In such conditions, a drone becomes the only tool capable of ensuring full control over the space. An experienced operator sees what is hidden from the infantryman's eyes, giving local commanders almost omnipotent capabilities.

Particular concern is caused by Hezbollah's active use of FPV drones, including those with fiber-optic control, making them immune to traditional electronic warfare means. Israel is closely studying the experience of the Ukrainian conflict, adapting tactics to new threats.

### "Sky Observers" as the Last Line of Defense

Technology alone does not guarantee victory. Therefore, the IDF is implementing a new defense doctrine that includes the training of specialized soldiers — "sky observers." Their task is the early detection of enemy aircraft and warning units. This is the last, critically important layer of protection, comparable to a bulletproof vest for a soldier.

"This unequivocally saves lives. We want to convey this doctrine to as many fighters as possible in field conditions," emphasizes the head of the drone school.

### Escalation of Attacks on Infrastructure

Hezbollah fighters have significantly intensified sabotage activities. Over the past few days, 12 attacks on Israeli military infrastructure have been recorded. Terrorists are paying special attention to air defense systems, including the "Iron Dome," trying to disable them with simple drones. The learning curve of both sides is growing at a rapid pace, and the conflict is moving into the sphere of technological confrontation.
