# Jet-Powered 'Shaheds' at 450 km/h: Why Interceptor Drones Can't Keep Up and What to Do About It

Jet-powered strike drones of the 'Shahed' type, which Russia is increasingly deploying against Ukraine, are becoming one of the most challenging targets for air defense systems and interceptor drones. According to Tymofiy Yurkov, co-founder of Contra-Drone, the speed of these aircraft exceeds 400–450 km/h, and most existing interceptors are physically incapable of operating in such a speed range. As a result, there are very few confirmed successful kills of jet-powered 'Shaheds,' and the cases that do exist are more often attributed by experts to chance than to a sustained tactical trend.

### The Physics of Interception: Why You Can't Catch Up

The navigation principle of the jet-powered 'Shahed' has not fundamentally changed compared to its conventional counterpart: the aircraft still relies on an inertial navigation system and a CRPA antenna. This means that the spectrum and methods of electronic countermeasures remain largely similar. However, it is precisely the physical interception — that is, a collision or the detonation of the interceptor in close proximity to the target — that becomes critically difficult. The interceptor operator can no longer simply "chase" the target: it is necessary to calculate the 'Shahed's flight trajectory in advance and perform an intercept ahead of it, which demands significantly higher skill and guidance accuracy than when dealing with conventional aerial UAVs.

### Limitations of the Interceptors Themselves

The problem is not limited to the target's speed alone. According to Yurkov, the interceptor drones themselves face engineering constraints: at speeds of around 350 km/h, difficulties begin to arise with the functionality of certain components, and the onboard batteries do not always withstand the required load regime. This creates a "speed ceiling" for interceptors that is substantially lower than the cruise speed of the jet-powered 'Shahed,' and as a result the window for a successful collision becomes extremely narrow.

### Radar as the Answer to Speed

Under these conditions, according to Contra-Drone specialists, the combination of interceptor drones with personal radars is becoming increasingly relevant. Such a system allows fast targets to be detected at an early stage and directs the interceptor not at the target itself, but at the point where its trajectory will intersect. Contra-Drone, in particular, manufactures radars for firing groups, and, as Yurkov notes, "the question of intercepting the target — not chasing it, but intercepting along its trajectory — will become increasingly relevant as the speed of the 'Shaheds' increases."

### ECM Remains the Primary Tool

Despite the growing difficulties of physical interception, suppressing the navigation of 'Shaheds' using electronic countermeasures (ECM) remains one of the most optimal solutions. This is especially relevant in scenarios of mass attack, when a large number of drones are simultaneously flying toward a city or facility: the overwhelming majority of 'Shaheds' lose the ability to reach their target precisely due to ECM suppression, rather than physical damage. According to Yurkov, the 'Bandierol' drone-missile is fundamentally no different from a regular 'Shahed' in terms of ECM resistance and, although it is a jet-powered aircraft, does not reach speeds as high as the jet-powered 'Shahed,' and therefore remains vulnerable to the same suppression methods.

### The Context of Escalation

Lately, Russia has been increasingly deploying both jet-powered drones of the 'Shahed' type and 'Bandierol' drone-missiles against Ukraine, which places additional strain on the air defense system and on interceptor drone operators.
