The Hungarian political scene has faced an unexpected turn: legendary chess player Judit Polgar has declined Prime Minister Peter Madjar's offer to run for the country's presidency. This decision was a response to a public invitation made by Madjar, hoping to unite a divided society through a figure universally respected.

### "I Do Not Feel Strong Enough to Take on Historical Responsibility"

Judit Polgar personally commented on the situation on social media. She thanked the Prime Minister for his trust but clearly stated her position: "I do not feel strong enough to take on the historical responsibility of uniting a divided nation, so I cannot accept this invitation." The chess player emphasized that she is not ready to shoulder the burden of responsibility for a country that remains deeply divided.

### Madjar Admits a Communication Error

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Madjar, who announced the athlete's refusal, admitted that he made a mistake by publicly announcing her candidacy before receiving her final consent. Despite the refusal, the politician emphasized that he still highly values Judit Polgar and hopes for her participation in the country's development in a different role. Madjar had previously publicly announced his intention to offer the legendary chess player the leadership of the state as an independent and non-partisan figure.

### The Legend Who Defeated Men

Judit Polgar is not just an athlete but a phenomenon of global scale. She is considered the strongest chess player in history. Polgar became the only woman to enter the top ten of the world ranking among men and the first woman to surpass the 2700 Elo rating mark. During her career, she defeated such giants of the chess world as Garry Kasparov and Boris Spassky.

### Political Context: Reforms and Change of Power

Polgar's refusal came against the backdrop of major political changes in Hungary. The position of president in the country has primarily representative functions, however, the head of state has the right of veto on laws and can send them back to parliament for reconsideration. The new president must be elected by parliament after the term of the previous head of state, Tamás Sulyok, ends.

Sulyok's resignation was part of the large-scale political reforms of the new government of Peter Madjar. On July 18, Tamás Sulyok officially signed constitutional changes terminating his powers, fulfilling the Prime Minister's request. Thus, the question of the successor becomes a key element of the current political agenda.
