# July Church Calendar: From Cosmas and Damian to the Day of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine

July in the church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) is filled with events that go far beyond ordinary Sunday services. For believers, this month becomes a time to honor key figures in the history of Christianity in Ukrainian lands, as well as to remember saints whose names are associated with miracles and spiritual enlightenment.

The OCU press service has published a detailed list of commemorative dates, emphasizing that each day carries deep meaning for the Ukrainian community. The calendar begins with the veneration of saints whose activities were aimed at healing people and ends with days of memory of the founders of monasticism and the baptizers of the country.

### Saint Healers and Miracle Workers

July 1st opens the month with the memory of the Holy Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian. These saints, who lived in the 3rd century, were blessed with the gift of healing. Their uniqueness lay in the fact that they provided medical assistance to all those in need absolutely free of charge, accepting no payment for their labor. It was precisely for this selfless feat that they received the nickname "Unmercenaries".

An important event for believers is also July 2nd — the Feast of the Placing of the Holy Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Blachernae. This event, which took place in the suburbs of Constantinople more than a thousand five hundred years ago, remains one of the significant moments in the history of the Christian world.

### Days of Memory of the Founders of Ukrainian Monasticism

The middle of July is dedicated to the veneration of saints who laid the foundation of the monastic tradition on the territory of modern Ukraine. On July 7th, the OCU honors the Venerable Job and Theodosius of Manyava. These ascetics are considered the founders of the unique Manyava Skete, often called the "Ukrainian Athos".

On July 10th, the day of memory of the Venerable Anthony of the Kiev Caves arrives. His name is inextricably linked to the history of the country, as he is considered the founder of Ukrainian monasticism and the creator of the famous Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

### Key Dates: From Princess Olga to the Baptism of Rus

A special place in the July calendar is occupied by days related to the history of the acceptance of Christianity in Rus. On July 11th, believers remember the Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga. She entered history as the first Christian to occupy the Grand Princely throne in Kiev.

On this same day, according to clarifications by the OCU, the collective celebration of the Archangel Gabriel is observed. In the context of Ukrainian history, this is also associated with the memory of Prince Askold — the first Christian ruler of Kiev, who carried out an evangelistic mission even before the general Baptism of Rus-Ukraine.

The culmination of the church events of July becomes July 15th — the day of memory of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Prince Vladimir. This date is the Day of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine, marking a turning point in the spiritual history of the state.

### End of the Month

At the end of the month, on July 25th, the Dormition of the Righteous Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos, is commemorated. The July church calendar concludes on the 31st, when additional commemorative days are mentioned in the New Julian calendar.
