# "War, war, war": Garry Kasparov warns of a Kremlin provocation in the Baltic states

Russian opposition figure and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov expressed confidence in an interview with Politico that Vladimir Putin is not ready for peace negotiations with Ukraine. Instead of diplomacy, the Kremlin may resort to radical escalation to test NATO's resolve.

According to Kasparov, the situation could escalate following the September parliamentary elections in Russia. The expert suggested that Moscow's next step would not be a full-scale offensive, but rather a local provocation on the eastern flank of the Alliance.

### Testing NATO's resilience

Kasparov outlined a worrying scenario: Russia might attempt to capture a small border town in Latvia or Estonia. The goal of such an action would be to test the readiness of Western partners to fulfill their collective defense obligations.

"Putin could invade a NATO country to see if other members of the Alliance, primarily the United States, would react," the opposition figure stated.

He warned that the West's reaction would be critical. If the US does not provide due support to the country under attack, the Kremlin will conclude that NATO has lost its strength.

"If the US does not help defend the country under attack, Putin will achieve his goal: NATO is no more," Kasparov emphasized.

### No signs of peace

According to the chess player, there is not a single signal in the actions of the Russian government or the speeches of the president indicating preparations to end the war. On the contrary, everything points to the continuation of the conflict.

"In the Russian propaganda machine, in the actions of the Russian government, in Putin's speeches, there is not a single sign that the Kremlin is preparing for peace. All signals point in only one direction: 'War, war, war, war'," Kasparov noted.

As evidence of the Kremlin's intention to continue military campaigns, he cited legislative initiatives aimed at simplifying mobilization. In particular, this refers to the abolition of mandatory medical examinations for some conscripts.

### Economic pressure and political consequences

Kasparov also commented on the effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure. In his opinion, attacks on military and industrial facilities are already damaging Russian elites, forcing them to lose money.

"The Ukrainians are doing very well, because every time they hit something, someone loses money," the opposition figure stated.

At the same time, he called on European countries to abandon the search for a compromise with Moscow and focus on supporting Kyiv. Kasparov is convinced that Ukraine's victory will lead to the fall of the regime.

"We must ensure that Putin loses. Because as soon as Putin loses the war – he will fall," he summarized.

### Vulnerabilities in Baltic defense

In the context of possible threats, experts note serious risks for the Baltic states. It was previously reported that Russia could force Lithuania to capitulate within a few months, even without deploying troops. Analysts have identified critical vulnerabilities in the country's defense system.

Expert Valentin Badrak also warned that NATO countries are currently not ready for a direct confrontation with the Russian army. He recalled the situation with military exercises in Estonia, where Ukrainian military personnel pointed out deficiencies in the Alliance's preparation.
