description: "Satellites recorded a 10-kilometer traffic jam of 1,500 cars before the Crimean Bridge. The cause was intensified inspections, drone attacks, and residents' desire to leave the peninsula amid a crisis. Furthermore, a series of earthquakes creates a threat of destruction to the structure built with violations. 🚗💥🌊"

# Kilometer-long traffic jams and threat of destruction: what is happening to the Crimean Bridge

Satellite images obtained by Planet Labs on Wednesday, June 24, recorded a massive accumulation of vehicles in the area of the Crimean Bridge. According to the data, the length of the traffic jam exceeds 10 kilometers. Approximately 1,500 vehicles were stuck in the queue, which stretches from the checkpoint before the bridge to the village of Ivanovka in the Kerch district.

### Logistical collapse and intensified inspections

The reasons for such a serious traffic jam lie in a complex of factors. Firstly, traffic on the bridge is regularly suspended due to announcements of missile danger, the operation of air defense systems, or threats of attacks by Ukrainian maritime unmanned aerial vehicles. Secondly, the occupying authorities have significantly intensified inspections at checkpoints. This decision regularly paralyzes both civilian and military logistics connecting the peninsula with mainland Russia.

### Social background and migration sentiments

The situation on the peninsula is exacerbated by internal problems. Against the backdrop of a fuel crisis and periodic power outages, local residents are increasingly publishing messages on social media about their intention to leave Crimea. The bridge, being the main transport artery, becomes a bottleneck through which hundreds of people trying to leave are attempting to pass.

### Consequences of strikes and infrastructure vulnerability

Tensions in the region remain at a high level. This weekend, a series of explosions was heard in Crimea, after which the occupying authorities completely blocked traffic. Local residents in the area of the Kerch Sea Port reported a fire and thick smoke. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian military forces struck targets on both sides of the bridge, located approximately 300 km from the front line.

Satellite images that appeared online recorded the consequences of these strikes on logistical and oil facilities. Experts note that Russia is transferring air defense systems to Moscow and the Kerch Bridge area, which significantly weakens protection in other directions.

### Threat to the physical integrity of the structure

In addition to military threats, the bridge infrastructure faces danger from natural phenomena. A series of earthquakes occurred near Crimea recently. Experts warn that seismic shocks have a critical impact on the structure built by the occupiers in violation of construction standards. The shocks have a "cumulative effect," which in the long term could lead to the destruction of the facility.
