Ukrainian center Kateryna Koval made a stellar start to the next stage of her career in the US collegiate NCAA league, debuting for the Baylor Bears. In her first official match of the season, her team confidently defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 87:66, while the basketball player herself became one of the standout figures on the court. For Koval, this match was her first since a September incident that led to her departure from her previous club.

### Debut Match Statistics

Koval spent 21 minutes on the floor, recording 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks. In terms of two-point shooting accuracy, she made 6 of 7 attempts, and from the free-throw line — 2 of 3. Such statistics for her first game in a new uniform highlight how quickly the Ukrainian player adapted to Baylor's tactics and immediately became one of the team's key players.

### Transfer Amidst the September Scandal

This debut match was Koval's first official appearance since the September incident. She previously played for Louisiana State University, but made a principled decision to leave the team after the university management signed Russian basketball player Anna Minaeva. Thanks to a special NCAA waiver, the Ukrainian player was able to change clubs outside the standard transfer window without missing a season, maintaining her career in the league.

### Third Year in American Basketball

The current season is Koval's third in the United States. She began her NCAA career at Notre Dame before spending a season at Louisiana. Throughout her time playing in America, the center has gone through all levels of Ukraine's youth and junior national teams, and in June 2025 she debuted for the senior national 3x3 team at a World Series stop in Vienna.

### Context: Sports and Geopolitics

Koval's move to Baylor comes against the backdrop of an overall cooling of sports contacts with Russia. Earlier, leading hockey national teams announced a boycott of matches against the Russian team following a relevant CAS decision. In such circumstances, the Ukrainian player's decision not to play in the same club as a Russian athlete and to continue her career in a strong NCAA team is viewed as a principled stance, and her successful debut as confirmation that she has found a platform where she can fully realize her potential.
