# Kyiv in mourning: large-scale rescue operation in Darnytskyi district after building collapse

In the night of July 2, 2026, the capital of Ukraine experienced one of the most severe air attacks in recent times. The epicenter of the tragedy was the Darnytskyi district, where a partial collapse of a multi-story residential building began following the strike. The situation at the scene of the emergency remains critical: rescuers are working around the clock, attempting to find people under the rubble.

### Scale of destruction and status of the search operation

According to official data from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), up to nine people may be trapped under the debris of building structures. The death of 21 people within the capital has already been confirmed, and the total number of injured has reached 85 citizens.

The head of the SES, Lieutenant General Andriy Danik, characterized the damage as critical during an interview on the "United News" telethon. Load-bearing elements were destroyed from the first to the ninth floors, and one of the stairwells was completely demolished. This creates colossal risks for rescuers, who have to operate in conditions of unstable structures.

### Work of rescue services

Liquidation of the consequences of the attack requires the involvement of significant resources. Heavy engineering equipment and specialized search equipment have been deployed at the scene. K-9 units have been brought in to help detect survivors in hard-to-reach areas.

Rescuers managed to evacuate 17 people from the danger zone, seven of whom were extracted directly from under the rubble. According to the agency's estimates, this is one of the highest figures for the simultaneous rescue of people at a single location under current conditions. The dismantling of rubble and stabilization of unstable building elements are being carried out continuously, despite the remaining risks of repeated air raid alerts.

### Official reaction and legal consequences

In connection with the large-scale destruction and human casualties, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko signed an order declaring July 3, 2026, a day of mourning in the capital. Damage of varying degrees of severity has been recorded not only in Darnytskyi but also in seven other districts of the city, including Shevchenkivskyi and Obolonskyi. In these districts, residential buildings and medical facilities were damaged.

Law enforcement agencies have already initiated procedural actions regarding the use of weapons that resulted in the death of civilians. Evidence is being collected within the framework of Ukraine's national legislation. According to the norms of international humanitarian law and the Criminal Code of the country, the intentional striking of civilian and residential infrastructure is classified as a violation of the laws and customs of war.
