# Kyiv in Smoke: Why the Air Has Become Dangerous for Health and How to Protect Yourself

On the morning of July 3, the capital of Ukraine was enveloped in thick smog. Kyiv residents are complaining of a sharp smell of burning and difficulty breathing. Environmental monitoring systems are recording a critical deterioration in air quality, which has reached dangerous levels in several districts.

### Red Zone: Monitoring Data

According to data from the Ukrainian environmental system SaveEcoBot, which tracks indicators in real-time, the average pollution level across the city has been recorded as harmful to sensitive groups. Calculations are based on the NowCast methodology (US EPA) with a focus on fine particulate matter fraction PM2.5 — the most dangerous type of pollution capable of penetrating deep into the lungs.

As of 10:00 AM on Friday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 124 units. However, the situation is uneven: in certain districts of the city, so-called "red" pollution levels are being recorded. Here, index indicators reach 190 units, indicating a serious threat to the health of all categories of citizens, not just those with chronic illnesses.

### Geography of Pollution: Where is the Air Cleaner?

Data from stationary monitoring points of the Kyiv City State Administration's Department for Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation show a spread of indicators across the city. The general Air Quality Index (CAQI) is used, which is formed based on a combination of pollutants. The lower this indicator, the safer the air.

The most tense situation has developed in the center and on the right bank. Thus, on European Solidarity Boulevard (64-G), the CAQI index reached 90 units. At the same time, the lowest indicator — 59 units — was recorded on the left bank of the capital, on Kharkiv Highway (house 7/1).

### Recommendations for Residents

Experts warn that the current level of pollution can cause breathing discomfort, headaches, and exacerbation of chronic diseases. To minimize risks, specialists recommend:

    - Limit time spent outdoors, especially during peak hours.

    - Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors.

    - Use protective masks (respirators) when leaving the house.

    - Install air purifiers at home and ventilate rooms only during hours with the lowest dust levels.

It was previously reported that the smoke enveloping Kyiv may have come from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, where natural fires continue. Meteorologists also forecast hot weather to persist in July, which, combined with the smog, creates additional health risks.
