# Red danger level: critical deterioration of air quality recorded in Kyiv

In the first half of the day on Tuesday, August 4, Kyiv residents faced a sharp deterioration in the environmental situation. Critical air pollution indicators were recorded in several districts of the capital, leading to the declaration of a "red" danger level at some monitoring points.

### Pollution map: where the air became dangerous

According to data from the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration, peak values of the Comprehensive Air Quality Index (CAQI) reached 100 units. Such indicators were recorded at stationary monitoring points located on the right bank of the Dnipro River.

The main pollutant causing the exceedance of standards was ozone (O3). The situation is confirmed by data from the "Digital Kyiv" mobile application. In particular, at 20 Shchuseva Street, the air condition was assessed as "dangerous," which requires special attention from residents, especially those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases.

It is important to note that parallel to the rise in air pollution, radiation levels in Kyiv remain within normal limits, ruling out technological accidents as the cause of the smoke.

### Cause: anticyclone and lack of wind

Experts link the current situation to meteorological factors rather than local emissions from industrial enterprises. Natalia Ptukha, Head of the Media Relations Department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, explained to RBC-Ukraine that the accumulation of harmful impurities is a standard atmospheric reaction to an anticyclone.

"When an anticyclone is established, the weather becomes calm and windless. Under such conditions, all impurities from emission sources do not disperse but gradually accumulate in the near-surface layer," the synoptician said.

According to the specialist, the accumulation effect becomes noticeable not on the first day, but after three to four days of such weather. It is precisely this time interval that coincides with the current situation in the capital.

### Forecast: when the air will clear

Specialists from Ukrhydrometcenter warned that the current situation will persist until the synoptic situation changes. Expected improvements are forecast for Friday, August 7.

On this day, Kyiv is expected to experience stronger winds and a probability of precipitation, which will help "wash" the atmosphere. Along with the change in weather, a temperature drop is also forecast, which will also have a positive effect on air quality.

At the moment, Ukrhydrometcenter does not have online monitoring data in its network, but daily concentrations will be published by the Central Geophysical Observatory the following day. Nevertheless, the synoptic picture provides a clear understanding of the causes and prospects for changes in the environmental situation in the city.
