# Kyiv prepares for a sharp price surge: public transport fares to increase nearly fourfold

Life in the capital of Ukraine will undergo significant changes from mid-summer 2026. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) has approved a radical increase in public transport tariffs, effective July 15. The cost of a single trip will rise to 30 hryvnias, which is four times the current tariff of 8 hryvnias.

### New payment system and discounts

City authorities emphasize that the increase does not mean a complete abandonment of support for regular passengers. A flexible discount system linked to the volume of transport card top-ups is being introduced. For those planning to use transport regularly, the following conditions are provided:

- An unlimited monthly pass for all types of municipal transport will cost 4875 hryvnias.

- Students will retain a 50% discount on the cost of a monthly pass.

- Schoolchildren will pay 25% of the cost during the summer period, while their travel remains free during the school year.

Special attention is paid to tourists and guests of the city. From August 1, a transfer ticket costing 60 hryvnias will come into effect in Kyiv. It grants the right to an unlimited number of transfers between the metro and surface transport within 90 minutes.

### What will happen to old tickets

For passengers who managed to top up their cards before the reform, a transition period is provided. Trips purchased at the old tariff of 8 hryvnias before July 14 will remain valid until September 14, 2026. After this period, unused trips will be automatically converted into a monetary equivalent on the transport card.

### Economic justification

The Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced plans to revise prices back in April, explaining this by the rise in energy prices and the need to reduce subsidies, which currently amount to 12 billion hryvnias per year. According to KCSA calculations, the cost of a single metro trip is 64.60 hryvnias, and in surface transport — 44.14 hryvnias. Thus, even the new tariff of 30 hryvnias remains below the real cost of service.

Kyiv is no exception to the general trend of 2026: tariff increases have already occurred in Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Zhytomyr. In Lviv, the cash fare may reach 30 hryvnias, and on intercity routes across the country, tickets have become 25% more expensive.
