# Latvia imposes a total ban on imports from Russia and Belarus: what falls under the sanctions

A fundamental decision has been made in Riga aimed at the complete isolation of economic ties with Moscow and Minsk. The Latvian parliament — the Saeima — at an extraordinary session on July 23 approved amendments to the Law "On Support for the Civil Population of Ukraine." The country's government now has broad powers to form and adjust the list of goods prohibited from import.

### What exactly is banned from import

The new restrictions have hit not only industrial goods but also cultural products. The list of prohibited goods includes books, toys, video games, and other consumer goods. The legislative act is aimed at blocking supply channels both directly from Russia and Belarus and through third countries.

However, the document provides an important nuance: the transit of these goods through Latvian territory to other European Union states remains permitted. This allows for the preservation of logistics chains within the bloc, but blocks final sales in the Latvian market.

### Voting and political context

The decision was made by an overwhelming majority. 66 Saeima deputies voted in favor of the amendments. Eight parliamentarians voted against, while another eight abstained or did not participate in the voting.

The initiative came from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The head of the ministry, Baiba Braže, emphasized that the specific list of goods will be approved by the government immediately after the law comes into force. According to the minister, one of the main goals is to counter Russian propaganda, which, according to Riga, is actively spread through print media and media content.

### Reaction against the backdrop of escalation

The adoption of the law takes place against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Latvia and Russia. Earlier, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs warned that he does not rule out the possibility of escalation from Moscow against NATO countries. He insisted that the Alliance must be ready to give a decisive response to any threats.

At the same time, since July 1, Russia has unilaterally suspended the passage of people, vehicles, and cargo through railway border checkpoints with Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. Thus, the new Latvian measures become a response to existing restrictions on the part of the Russian Federation, supplementing the European Union's sanctions package.
