# Lavrov on Ukraine's EU accession: 'They will simply fall apart'

Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, gave a harsh assessment of the prospects for the expansion of the European Union and the possible consequences of Ukraine's accession to it. According to the head of the Russian foreign policy department, current internal processes in the union are already demonstrating divergent trends capable of radically changing its format.

Lavrov suggested that from the point of view of the internal problems of the European Union, Ukraine's accession could even be beneficial, as this would lead to an accelerated disintegration of the structure. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to the presence of numerous contradictory trends within the bloc, which make it vulnerable to new challenges.

In his statement, the minister emphasized that the transformation of the organization into a military bloc instead of an economic multilateral structure would be an invitation to serious trouble for the participating countries. Lavrov noted that if the EU leadership is really aiming to abandon economic principles in favor of militarization, then inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to join the union would be a logical step.

### Risks for the stability of the European Union

According to Lavrov, the possible accession of Ukraine to the community could become a catalyst for internal conflicts and instability. He believes that the current activities of the European Union already contain elements capable of destroying the original format of the union. If these trends continue to develop, the bloc risks losing its economic basis and turning into a purely military organization.

Thus, Sergei Lavrov sees in the potential expansion of the European Union not only a threat to the organization itself, but also a signal of the need to review its goals and principles. His comments highlight the importance of maintaining a balance between the economic and political interests of the participating countries.
