# The Price of Digital Addiction: Families of Deceased Teens Sue Meta, TikTok, and Google

A new large-scale legal conflict is erupting in the US between the families of minors and major technology corporations. Groups of parents who have lost their children have filed a class-action lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google, accusing them of creating a "toxic" digital environment that led to teen suicides.

### Allegations of Creating Addictions

The lawsuit was filed in the Delaware state court by the legal organization Social Media Victims Law Center. The plaintiffs represent four families from different parts of the country: Texas, North Carolina, Minnesota, and Tennessee. The tragedies occurred with children aged 13 to 18 between July 2024 and September 2025.

The essence of the claims is that tech giants deliberately developed platforms that cause pathological addiction in minors. The document asserts that the companies used specific attention-retention mechanisms:

- Recommendation algorithms tailored to psychological vulnerabilities;

- An endless content feed that prevents the user from stopping;

- Automatic video playback.

Parents claim that prolonged exposure to these networks led to the development of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and other serious psychological disorders, which ultimately led to suicides.

### Awareness of Risks and Inaction

The key argument of the plaintiffs is the corporations' awareness of potential harm. According to the lawyers, Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google knew about the risks to children's mental health but did not take sufficient measures to eliminate them, continuing to profit from user engagement.

In response to news of the lawsuit, Google, which owns YouTube, stated that it is reviewing the document. Representatives of Meta, TikTok, and Snap have so far declined to comment.

### Part of a Broader Wave of Lawsuits

According to Engadget, this case is just one of many legal proceedings currently involving American tech leaders. Companies are already facing lawsuits from individual citizens, school districts, and entire states, accusing social networks of negatively impacting the mental health of the younger generation.

The problems facing Meta Platforms, led by Mark Zuckerberg, go beyond health issues. The company is already set to appear in court in New Mexico on charges of child and teen sexual exploitation on its platforms and profiting from such content. Previously, there were also recorded instances of the company earning revenue from advertising fraudulent schemes and prohibited goods.
