# Lawyer demands arrest of former PM Orban: 'Golden Convoy' case reaches new level

The situation surrounding the scandalous case of the detention of Ukrainian cashiers in Hungary has taken a sharp turn. The lawyer representing the interests of Oshchadbank employees has officially demanded the arrest of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and a number of high-ranking officials. The lawyer justifies this demand with materials previously published by the Hungarian publication 444.hu.

### Accusations of unlawful deprivation of liberty

According to the defense's position, investigators need to check the criminal liability of former officials for seven episodes. The lawyer accuses the subjects of unlawful deprivation of liberty committed for base motives, as well as the use of torture against the detainees.

The central issue of the investigation, according to the defense, is the nature of the detention itself. Lawyers insist that the actions of the Hungarian authorities could not be a result of law enforcement, but a politically motivated decision aimed at realizing state interests. If it is confirmed that orders to deprive of liberty were given at the political level, bypassing procedural legislation, such actions are classified as unlawful detention.

In addition, the lawyer points to the high risk of the subjects influencing the course of the investigation. It is this factor, in his opinion, that makes the detention and subsequent arrest of former officials the only justified measure.

### Reaction of the Hungarian prosecution

The General Prosecutor's Office of Hungary is currently refraining from commenting on the authenticity of the documents cited by the defense of the Ukrainian side. The department emphasized that an active investigation is continuing in the case, and any speculation regarding potential suspects could harm the process of proving.

However, the country's chief prosecutor, Gábor Balint Nagy, made an important statement. He noted that from a professional point of view, a well-founded suspicion against certain officials could have been formulated long ago.

### Chronology of events: from detention to return of assets

Let us recall the key facts that became the reason for the investigation. On March 6, 2026, two Oshchadbank armored vehicles were illegally detained on the territory of Hungary. At the time of transport, there was currency and 9 kg of gold with a total value of $40 million and €35 million.

The then government of Viktor Orban initiated an investigation on suspicion of money laundering. The country's parliament adopted a special law on the arrest of assets, which Kyiv regarded as open theft. Diplomatic pressure continued for several months. Only on May 6 did President Volodymyr Zelensky report that Hungary had returned the requested assets.
