# Leptospirosis in Ukraine: Why Water Recreation Can Be Dangerous and How to Protect Yourself

The summer season in Ukraine brings not only the joy of outdoor recreation but also increased health risks. The country's Ministry of Health has warned of a rise in leptospirosis cases — an infection that becomes more active during the period when people frequently visit water bodies, work in gardens, or come into contact with animals.

### Statistics and Seasonality

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, 32 cases of leptospirosis have already been recorded in the first five months of 2026. The peak incidence occurs during the spring-summer period, when outdoor activity increases and contact with potential sources of infection becomes more likely.

### What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection, meaning the pathogens circulate primarily among animals but can also be transmitted to humans. The main carriers are rodents, livestock, and stray animals. Infection occurs through damaged skin or mucous membranes upon contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals.

### How Does Infection Occur?

According to the Ministry of Health, the most dangerous situations include:

- Swimming in contaminated water bodies, especially after heavy rains, floods, or storms;

- Working in vegetable gardens and garden plots without protective clothing;

- Contact with domestic or wild animals, especially if there are wounds or scratches on the skin;

- Consuming raw water from natural sources.

### Symptoms and Course of the Disease

The first signs of leptospirosis usually appear 7–14 days after infection, although the incubation period can range from 2 to 30 days. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, and sometimes jaundice. With timely diagnosis and treatment, most patients recover fully.

### Prevention: Simple Safety Rules

To reduce the risk of infection, the Ministry of Health recommends observing the following precautions:

- Avoid swimming in questionable water bodies, especially after extreme weather events;

- Use protective clothing and gloves when working in the garden or vegetable patch;

- Do not drink raw water from natural sources;

- Regularly vaccinate domestic animals, especially dogs;

- Follow food safety rules: wash hands, vegetables, and fruits; do not consume raw meat or dairy products of unknown origin.

Dog owners, in particular, must remember about annual vaccination of animals against leptospirosis. This not only protects the pet but also reduces the risk of transmitting the infection to humans.
