# Logistics Collapse: How Strikes on Crimea Changed the Russian Army's Supply Scheme in the South

The Crimean Peninsula, which for a long time served as a key rear hub for the Russian military grouping in the southern direction, has lost its strategic significance. According to Ukrainian analysts and independent OSINT research, systematic fire impact on the region's transport infrastructure has led to a de facto restructuring of the entire supply logistics chain.

Expert Dmitry Snegirev, speaking on air at the end of June 2026, pointed out that the efficiency of Crimea as a transit hub has significantly decreased. This forced the Russian command to change the routes for delivering ammunition, fuel, and equipment, which directly affects the operational capabilities of units in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

### Severing the Arteries: Ferries and the Bridge

The main cause of logistics destabilization was the disruption of key transport arteries connecting mainland Russia with the peninsula. Experts highlight several critical factors that turned Crimea from a reliable accumulation base into a zone of risk:

    - **Collapse of ferry communications:** Direct transfer of cargo from the Taman region has been blocked. In particular, key vessels have lost functionality, including the railway ferry "Slyavianin," which previously played an important role in the transshipment of dual-use cargo.

    - **Blockade of the Crimean Bridge:** Due to constant threats from cruise missiles and unmanned boats, the use of the bridge for the movement of heavy convoys with ammunition and fuel is limited by technical safety regulations. Regular movement of heavy equipment across the crossing has become impossible.

    - **Vulnerability of warehouses:** Large logistics centers and oil depots on the peninsula are regularly targeted by precision weapons. This has made long-term storage of significant reserves in Crimea economically and operationally unfeasible.

### Shifting Vectors: New Land Corridor

In the context of the degradation of sea and bridge routes, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation was forced to redirect the main volume of supplies to land routes. Now the logistics chain for groupings in the Azov region and on the left bank of the Dnieper passes through Mariupol, Berdyansk, and Melitopol.

Such a restructuring has serious consequences for the front-line situation:

    - **Increase in supply distance:** New routes require more time to deliver cargo from rear bases to the front line.

    - **Increased risks:** The Azov region highways are within the range of the Armed Forces of Ukraine artillery. Traffic density on these highways has increased, making them vulnerable to strikes.

    - **Slowing of rotation:** Logistics on isolated sections, including the Kinburn Spit, have become more complicated. Delivery of scarce positions and evacuation of the wounded now take more time.

In accordance with the norms of international humanitarian law, transport and port infrastructure used to support warring groupings is considered a legitimate target. It is precisely this principle that allowed the Ukrainian side to inflict systematic damage on the enemy's logistics model, turning Crimea from a convenient rear into a "bottleneck" that cannot be effectively used for large-scale operations.
