# Long-term energy auctions in Ukraine: business has received a tool for protection against price spikes

The Ukrainian energy market has undergone significant changes that have already been evaluated by direct participants in the trading. The launch of the long-term electricity auction mechanism has received approval from the business community, which sees in this innovation a real tool for planning and protection against price volatility.

### Moving from a standstill

Vasyl Kosheliuk, founder and head of the company "LTK ELECTRUM", called this step successful. According to him, the market has finally moved from theoretical discussions to practical actions. Experts and energy traders have insisted on the need for such changes for years, and now they have become a reality.

"The market has finally moved from a standstill," Kosheliuk emphasized. The new mechanism does not replace existing segments, such as the "day-ahead" market, but complements them, providing companies with additional opportunities to procure resources.

### A financial shield for business

Before the introduction of long-term contracts, most enterprises were forced to purchase electricity for the short term. The cost of resources for the next month became known almost at the last moment. Under such conditions, production planning, concluding export contracts, and investment were associated with high risks.

New auctions allow fixing the price and volume of supplies for several months at once. The fixed cost in a long-term contract acts as a financial shield, guaranteeing the buyer predictable conditions for the entire duration of the contract.

### Participant interest and the pilot stage

The first auctions aroused high interest: dozens of companies participated in them — from traders to industrial and agricultural enterprises. An important aspect was the appearance of small lots, which opened access to resources not only for large players but also for medium-sized businesses.

The head of "LTK ELECTRUM" noted that the current trading volume is important, but still a pilot project. The company "LTK ELECTRUM" has already participated in the auctions for the sale of resources from "Energoatom" and "Ukrenergo".

### Future plans and market context

The next step should be a gradual increase in the volumes and terms of contracts, expansion of the circle of participants, as well as bringing trading rules closer to European practice. The first auctions received a positive assessment both from the state and from market participants.

It is important to note the context in which these changes are taking place. Previously, the NKREKU raised price caps (maximum prices) on short-term market segments in January 2026. This decision allowed expanding import interconnections and increasing the inflow of electricity from Europe during the period of shortage caused by infrastructure damage as a result of Russian shelling. However, this decision was temporary: from March 31, price caps should return to their previous level.

The Ministry of Energy also positively assessed the results of the first two stages of the special session on the sale of electricity under long-term bilateral agreements, confirming that the new system is working for the stability of the industry.
