### New World Record in Solar Energy

Chinese company LONGi Green Energy Corp. has announced the achievement of a significant technological milestone. A new type of solar cell developed by the company demonstrated an energy conversion efficiency of 35.5 percent. This result did not remain at the level of laboratory claims: it was officially confirmed by the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) — a reference laboratory specializing in the calibration of photovoltaic devices.

The 35.5% figure looks revolutionary against the backdrop of current market realities. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), solar cells used in mass-produced panels are only approaching the 25 percent efficiency mark. Existing cells with an efficiency of around 50 percent do exist, however, their application is limited to niche areas, such as satellite power supply, and they are not yet available for mass production.

### Tandem Cell Technology

LONGi's success is based on the use of advanced tandem solar cell architecture. At their core lies a combination of crystalline silicon and perovskite. This emerging photovoltaic technology, according to the company's engineers, will define the future of solar energy. Theoretical calculations show that such cells are capable of reaching an efficiency of 43 percent.

The path to the current record was achieved through a series of sequential improvements:

- In November 2023, the company first reached an efficiency of 33.9 percent.
- In June 2024, the figure rose to 34.6 percent.
- Now, the final result is announced at 35.5 percent.

### Context and Prospects

LONGi claims to hold the world record for efficiency specifically for this tandem cell technology. However, it is worth noting that the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed a solar cell with an efficiency of 39.5 percent back in 2022.

On a global scale, the debate over who specifically holds the absolute record is of secondary importance to most consumers. The key task facing the industry is to establish mass production and commercialization of cells with such efficiency. It is precisely the transition from laboratory achievements to industrial scale that will help in solving humanity's global energy problems.
