# Lukashenko confident: war in Ukraine could end in 2026 — it all depends on 'a few people'

### Lukashenko declares possibility of conflict resolution this year

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko expressed confidence that military conflicts, including Russia's war against Ukraine, could be halted as early as the current year. He made this statement in an interview published by the Telegram channel 'Pool of the First', which is close to the Belarusian leadership.

"This year, I believe, these conflicts can be stopped. And I don't just hope, I am confident that they will be stopped," Lukashenko emphasized, referring to both the situation in Ukraine and the tension in the Middle East, particularly surrounding Iran.

According to him, resolving the issue depends solely on the political will of "literally a few people." "If such a desire exists, these wars can definitely be ended this year. Even the conflict between Russia and Ukraine can be concluded this year. As for the Middle East, there are no other options there. There is no way to stop the war," the Belarusian leader added.

### Frontline situation: data on casualties and liberated territories

Amidst these statements, active hostilities continue. According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces Command, in May 2026, Ukrainian troops liberated 100 square kilometers more territory than they had previously lost. Since the beginning of the year, the total area of de-occupied lands has exceeded 600 square kilometers, reports Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

At the same time, British intelligence GCHQ released shocking figures: losses of the Russian army in the war in Ukraine, according to the head of the agency Anne Kist-Butler, have already approached 500,000 servicemen. The expert noted that an actual retreat of Russian forces is observed on several sections of the front.

### Zelensky: coming months are decisive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that the next few months will be critically important for the outcome of the conflict. In his opinion, the results of upcoming EU, G7, and NATO summits could have a decisive impact on diplomatic efforts and the prospects for achieving a ceasefire.

Thus, despite Lukashenko's optimistic forecasts, reality remains complex: military actions continue, and key players — from Kyiv to London — are betting on a combination of military resilience and diplomatic pressure.
