As reported by the club on its official website, the Portuguese specialist himself expressed a desire to leave the team after receiving an offer from Lisbon's Sporting, towards whom, according to the coach himself, he holds special feelings. Lyon's management called the decision unexpected and expressed regret regarding its timing, but accepted it, concluding that further cooperation would no longer guarantee the necessary dedication to the joint project. The early contract termination will cost Sporting €5 million in compensation, which the Lisbon club will pay to the French side. ### Circumstances and Club Reaction Lyon's statement emphasizes that Fonseca's departure came as a surprise to the management primarily due to the temporal context: the coach is leaving the team mid-season while the squad is in the upper part of the standings. At the same time, the club decided not to obstruct the specialist, explaining that continuing work under the conditions of a decision he had already made would not allow preserving the degree of involvement and dedication to the project that Lyon considers necessary for successful work. Thus, formally the initiative came from the coach himself, and the club limited itself to confirming the fact of the termination of cooperation. ### Financial Aspect and Contract Status Paulo Fonseca's contract with Lyon was valid until June 2027, meaning the Portuguese could have headed the team for almost another season and a half. The early termination of the agreement is formalized as a compensation payment from Sporting amounting to 5 million euros. This amount, by the standards of the coaching transfer market, is standard for a contract of this level and reflects the remaining part of the contractual obligations. For Lyon, receiving the compensation partially covers the organizational costs associated with the need to look for a new manager in the middle of the championship. ### Interim Management and Upcoming Matches Until the appointment of a new permanent head coach, the duties of Lyon's manager will be assumed by Jorge Maciel. He will lead the team until the next international break and prepare it for key matches of the upcoming rounds: the Europa League fixture against Real Sociedad and the French championship match against Brest. Both opponents represent a serious challenge, and the interim coach will have to maintain the team's competitiveness in conditions where a change in leadership is usually accompanied by a certain drop in concentration. ### Fonseca at Lyon: Context and Results The 53-year-old Portuguese took charge of Lyon in January 2025, succeeding his predecessor. At the time of his departure, the team occupies third place in the Ligue 1 standings with 17 points after nine matches played. This result can be considered working for a club that has been undergoing a period of reconstruction in recent years. Fonseca's coaching resume before Lyon includes Shakhtar, Roma, Lille, and Milan — clubs he worked with throughout his career, making him one of the most experienced specialists in Europe combining work across different national championships. ### Return to Portuguese Football Fonseca's new club will be Sporting CP from Lisbon, where he previously worked as a coach, and before that managed Porto and Braga. Thus, the Portuguese is returning to a football environment with which he is connected by long-term professional and, as he formulates it himself, emotional ties. Notably, on November 3, Sporting defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 1:0 in the fourth round of the Champions League main stage — a match in which Fonseca was no longer associated with the team, but which became part of the context of his return to Portuguese football. For Sporting, Fonseca's appointment means strengthening the coaching staff with a specialist experienced in top leagues, and for the coach himself, an opportunity to continue his career in the league where he shaped his professional style. ## Fact-Check & Sources - ["Лион" официально отпустил Фонсеку в "Спортинг" за 5 млн евро](https://sport.rbc.ua/ukr/football/lion-ofitsiyno-vidpustiv-fonseku-sportinga-1793798980.html) - The primary source contains Lyon's official statement from the club's website: compensation amount €5m, interim coach Jorge Maciel, standings (3rd place, 17 points, 9 matches), Fonseca's appointment date (January 2025), contract term (until June 2027), coach's age (53), Sporting vs Shakhtar match result 1:0 (November 3). ## FAQ ### Why is Paulo Fonseca leaving Lyon?
