The full-scale war has radically changed the map of consumer demand in Ukraine. Along with the population and businesses, money and purchasing power have moved to the western part of the country, turning the region into the main arena for fierce competition in food retail.

How chains are reacting to this new distribution of forces and who is winning the fight for this promising area — in the RBK-Ukraine article "Major supermarket reshuffle: who is buying up regional chains in Ukraine".

### The West as a new center of attraction

According to State Statistics Service data for January–May 2026, the growth rate of turnover in the Kyiv region was 19.4%, while in Kyiv itself it was only 13.7%. The common explanation through internal migration (VPL) is only part of the picture. Social payments to displaced persons remain low: the basic income is 4,500 UAH, and living allowances are 2–3 thousand hryvnias per month.

"The tourist attractiveness of the region plays a significantly larger role," notes Natalia Kolesnichenko, senior economist at the Center for Economic Strategy. Enterprises are moving to the region, offices are opening, and more affluent consumers are visiting.

"The West is the undisputed leader in the territorial development of retailers," explains Ihor Huhlia, Director of GT Partners Ukraine.

### The Novus case and acquisitions

The most illustrative example is the Novus chain. When the "Arsenal" supermarkets and other assets of the Eurotek group (more than 60 outlets) closed in May 2026, the Lithuanian BT Invest "snatched up" two Lviv locations and one in Ivano-Frankivsk, achieving the chain's first entry into Lviv with practically no new construction.

Meanwhile, "Tavria V" — one of the largest chains in the South, owned by Mykhailo and Borys Muzalev and Vyacheslav Pismenyuk — is expanding in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. On June 5, 2026, the chain opened a store in Dolyna. In 2025, its revenue reached 15.3 billion UAH (+12%).

### Competition and acquisitions

Today, local chains "Symi", "Blyzhenko", "Tano" and national players ATB, Fara, Novus, Divocin are competing simultaneously for Lviv, Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Such density of competition in the region has never been seen before.

"Regional chains with 10-50 stores are an ideal target for acquisition: ready-made infrastructure, an established base, often own or long-term premises," notes Anna Anisimova, Commercial Director of GDS.

However, they cannot withstand competition with national players in logistics, IT, and operational efficiency. According to Anisimova, relatively strong regional operators still remain in western Ukraine, but the pressure will become critical as soon as national chains finally establish themselves.
