## Key Points

- Maksym Bilyi joined Shakhtar's academy through an open trial at the stadium.
- He won the Under-19 European Championship with Ukraine in 2009.
- He trained with Shakhtar's Brazilian stars Fernandinho, Willian, and Jadson.
- He is developing a coaching career and believes in the future of Ukrainian football.

Ukrainian football player and novice coach Maksym Bilyi shared his memories of growing up in the Shakhtar Donetsk academy, playing for Ukraine's youth national team, and transitioning into professional sports. In a frank interview, he discussed the realities of sports boarding schools in the 2000s, training under Mircea Lucescu, and the experience of working with future global stars.

### The Path to Shakhtar's Academy and Boarding School Life

According to Bilyi, in his youth, getting into Donbas's main team was possible through massive open trials that gathered hundreds of applicants. A native of the Donbas region, he successfully passed several selection stages and fulfilled his childhood dream by joining the club's structure. However, the daily life of young players back then was vastly different from modern conditions, where parents can monitor their child 24/7 via video link. Young trainees had to call their families in the evening from the only payphone in the dormitory, overcoming the first serious hardships of independent life far from home.

### The Impact of Dutch Specialists and Training with Brazilian Stars

A real turning point in the academy's operations came with the arrival of foreign specialists Patrick van Leeuwen and Henk van Stee, who completely restructured the training process to a European standard. Thanks to this system, promising players began to be called up for training sessions with the first team during international breaks. Bilyi had the opportunity to share the pitch with stars such as Fernandinho, Willian, Jadson, Ilsinho, and Luiz Adriano. This experience gave a powerful boost to his professional growth, even though the team's core at the time consisted of foreign players.

### The Triumph of Euro 2009 and Career Lessons

In 2009, Bilyi was part of the Ukraine youth national team that won the European Championship, hosted by Donetsk and Mariupol. Although he did not feature on the pitch during the tournament itself, the gold medal became a milestone in his biography. Later in his career, he played for Stal Alchevsk, his beloved Zorya, and Croatian side Hajduk. Now, the athlete is pursuing a coaching career, speaks Portuguese, and believes in the swift revival of Ukrainian football on its home stadiums.

### The Value of Experience and the Prospects of Ukrainian Football

Having gone through the rigorous school of boarding facilities, training with top players, and European cup battles, Bilyi concluded that junior titles do not guarantee a successful adult career. Today, his focus is on coaching, where his accumulated knowledge and understanding of modern game trends should help nurture a new generation of Ukrainian players. Experience with foreign coaches and a deep understanding of domestic football's structure lay a solid foundation for his further professional journey.
