# «Marsupial» Tactics: How Ukrainian Drones Dropped a Robot Behind Enemy Lines for the First Time

A technological revolution has taken place on the battlefield, changing the very concept of warfare. The Ukrainian Defense Forces have carried out the first-ever air raid involving robots delivered directly to the battlefield by drones. This event marks a transition from the simple use of unmanned aerial vehicles to complex combined operations.

### «Marsupial» Tactics: The Essence of the New Strategy

As journalists have ascertained, the role of the «air carrier» in this operation was fulfilled by a heavy unmanned aerial vehicle. Its task was to deliver the ARK-1 ground robotic complex deep into the rear of the Russian army. Experts have already dubbed this tactic «marsupial» — by analogy with marsupial animals. The essence of the method is simple and effective: one device transports another and «releases» it at the necessary point to carry out a combat mission.

### From Theory to Practice

The idea of using drones to deliver other unmanned vehicles or ground robots existed even before the start of the full-scale war. However, it is Ukraine that became the first country to apply this concept in real combat conditions. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are already actively using a similar principle with FPV drones: large unmanned vehicles bring more maneuverable machines closer to the target, after which the latter are sent to carry out the combat mission.

A similar approach was successfully tested in the marine environment as well. During the first-ever unmanned naval landing on the Kinburn Spit, an unmanned boat delivered a tracked ground robot with a remotely controlled machine gun to the shore. After landing, the machine moved inland, presumably for reconnaissance and searching for remnants of Russian troops.

### Why is this a breakthrough?

The USA were not the first to think about such technologies. The Pentagon tested similar systems back in 2003, 2009, and 2014. In particular, as part of the STORK project, a drone dropped a ground robot by parachute to perform reconnaissance tasks, while unmanned helicopters Fire Scout and K-MAX practiced the landing of robotic platforms. However, none of these projects ever reached actual combat use.

Unlike the USA, which had much greater resources, Ukraine managed to create such a system with a limited budget and has already applied it in real combat conditions. This proves that necessity and adaptability often play a bigger role than just the availability of funding.

### The Situation on the Front

In addition to technological breakthroughs, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully counterattacked and are advancing in the Kharkiv region. At the same time, the country's air defense continues to effectively repel attacks, neutralizing targets during new Russian strikes.
